Donald L. Savage FACETS Replies Peter A. Gersten June 14, 2001 Donald L. Savage Re: Your letter dated May 30, 2001 Dear Mr. Savage: With respect to the above-referenced letter, though you state that Dr. Weiler's letter to me contained "an error regarding the date of public availability of the latest images of the Mars Cydonia "face" feature" you do not address the cause of that error. The FACETS' membership, based upon Dr. Weiler's statement in his May 11th letter that the new images were posted on a public web site on April 19th, wasted a considerable number of hours searching for those images and Dr. Malin's commentary. My client would like an explanation as to why the images weren't posted until May 24th, more than a month later and almost two weeks after Dr. Weiler's letter. I would also like to know when the error was detected and why I wasn't immediately notified in order to avoid unnecessary confusion. Further, it is not clear whether you are responding to my May 21st letter to Dr. Weiler or simply stating the obvious, almost a week after the images were actually posted. If in response to my letter, could you please also address my client's request for a meeting. Finally, I would think that the above circumstance would warrant an apology by NASA. Possibly an assurance that a similar type of error would not happen again. Unfortunately I find neither in your letter. Sincerely, Peter A. Gersten Cc: David Jinks, FACETS |
