Deep Impact ... Deeper Denial

OK, it's now been fourteen days ... and counting--

With NO NEW OFFICIAL INFORMATION coming out of NASA on its (actually, our ...) $333 million dollar "ninty-day wonder" Mission -- Deep Impact.

Well ... not quite true ....

There WAS a bit of "Deep Impact" news late last week:

Michael A'Hearn announced through a Space.com story that--

"NASA has given us a tiny amount of funding to make a maneuver next week that will set up the right trajectory and then enough money to keep the spacecraft alive in safe mode," said Michael A'Hearn, an astronomer at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. He is the Deep Impact mission's principal investigator ...."

This, of course, is any NASA scientist's greatest coup: that HIS mission has been authorized to go on ... after it's primary mission ... to gather more "good science."

In this case, the actual news is that the Deep Impact Fly-by spacecraft (the one that didn't hit the Comet) has now been funded to carry out a critical "thruster firing" in the next few days, which will bring it back near Earth in January of 2008, prelude to being fully funded to go on to another comet (apparently not yet officially selected by NASA Headquarters -- though there are "rumors") ....

Yet, remarkably, NOTHING about this major success -- the beginnings (even if minimal) of another "extended mission" for the Deep Impact spacecraft and its scientific Team -- has been published on the official Deep Impact website!

In fact, nothing's changed on that website -- not even the continued posting of old, recycled images ... and recently, even worse, totally pointless images of Tempel 1 from Earth! -- for several days ....

It's almost as if someone wants everyone to stop going to the Deep Impact site for any "new news" -- especially ... the press.

The Space.com story did, however, contain one juicy nugget (in addition to the extended mission possibility) -- again, NOT displayed on the JPL official Deep Impact website. Quoting Dr. Donald Yeomans, Supervisor of the Solar System Dynamics Group at JPL:

"Using an Earth swingby, the spacecraft could be re-targeted to comet 85P/Boethin in late 2008," Yeomans said. Cameras on-board the Flyby spacecraft have shown their abilities to provide impressive imaging. Additionally, the infrared spectrometer has also performed beautifully, he said ...."

Cameras ... impressive imaging? Spectrometer ... performed beautifully!?

How the hell would we know??! No one at NASA has shown us ANY REAL DATA on what Deep Impact actually found from these "impressive" instruments... for two whole weeks--

From a $333 million dollar mission that, again, we paid for!

And, the real story here is that--

No one really cares ....

* * *

I know there's been some significant discussion here and elsewhere, regarding "the appropriate interval between the gathering of NASA scientific data ... and when to publish it." And, since Deep Impact's successful conclusion of its primary Mission two weeks ago, late Sunday night July 3rd, some commentators have been advising everyone to "just be patient. There must be an orderly process for the proper verification of this important, close-up Deep Impact imagery and spectral information ..."

Poppycock.

Look at the critical scientific information which has already been published on Deep Impact, from all the other NASA (and non-NASA) scientific teams which were looking at the Comet ... from spacecraft in Earth orbit to the major network of terrestrial observatories all around the world, with their special programs specifically set up to monitor this Impact.

Swift ... SWAS ... Gemini North ... ESO ... Keck ....

In fact, here's the latest ESO information on what its observatories have discovered so far ....

"... From the current analysis, it appears most likely that the impactor did not create a large new zone of activity and may have failed to liberate a large quantity of pristine material from beneath the surface ....

"Further spectropolarimetric observations with FORS1 have confirmed the surface of the comet to be rather evolved - as expected [really?] - but more importantly, that the dust is not coming from beneath the surface [emphasis added] ..."

Looking grimer and grimer for the NASA "dirty snowball" model ....

But, the germain question here is simply: does the almost immediate publication of these major scientific results and preliminary conclusions -- and in a form immediately accessible to all of us via the Web -- somehow INVALIDATE their scientific content?

Of course not!

The only excuse for the JPL Deep Impact Team not doing exactly the same thing -- and with spectacular new color pictures (out of, remember, "over 4500" ...), or from presenting even one of those vital, post-Impact spectral readings -- is that "someone" obviously doesn't want them to ....

At least, not yet.

What's astonishing is that the press, including the so-called "scientific press"--

Is letting them completely get away with it!

There are, of course, simple mundane reasons for this "non-reaction" by the media to the Deep Impact never-ending-story:

The Carl Rove/Valerie Plame/CIA soap opera is MUCH juicier (ah, just like the old days ... more scandel in the White House!). And then, there's the "on again, off again, on again ... someday" Shuttle story--

"Astronauts returning to space after more than two years -- in an aging, Model-T-type spaceship ... which can't even keep its window covers from falling on its fragile tiles ... or its wiring from shorting out just at the critical moment ...."

See ... a MUCH more dramatic cliffhanger!

But after these obvious, "logical" excuses -- to explain away the lack of even one mainstream news report on the increasingly peculiar "missing data from Deep Impact ..." -- unfortunately, there is a much deeper, never-discussed-in-public systemic problem:

"NASA" has always been a "non-story" to the American press!

* * *

I first discovered this astonishing reality (well, it was astonishing to me back then ...) when I was tapped to become Walter Cronkite's Science Advisor at CBS, now over ... well ... quite a while ago.

It was at CBS that I first encountered the not-so-well-concealed (among the press) "men's room" acronym for NASA's own initials--

NASA ... "Never A Straight Answer" ....

Although why the Agency got this perjorative even then was never clear; in those days, NASA would overwhelm the press with tons of technical details and trivia (see below). If anything, it overdescribed each mission in this "Golden Age" of space ... and space reporting.

There were (at that time) literally thousands of print and broadcast reporters, editors and producers -- to say nothing of the small army of cameramen, technicians, drivers, etc. -- all covering the NASA story ... all over the country ... all over the world. All "hanging" on literally every word that someone, anyone "from NASA" would utter -- be it one of the astronauts themselves, either officially about a mission or just out for a joy ride on an afternoon in one of their cool "gift Corvettes"; or their the wives, stoically being "model wives at home, in front of the television set," as their brave husbands took off again and again for "outer space"; or, even just the guy who brought Walley Shirra a ham sandwich ....

Anything -- or anyone -- even slightly associated with "NASA" (even the guy who delivered lunch to A Real Live Astronaut ...) got his or her "15 seconds" -- which added up to a lot of network air time.

Even the unmanned missions ....

Like -- the first ~3:00 AM soft-landing on the Moon by Surveyor 1 (which NBC covered all one night, with me as a drafted advisor not even out of high school (!) in 1966), to the later unmanned fly-bys of Mars (my first "official" unmanned mission) -- Mariners 6 & 7 -- which I was officially covering on-air just three years later, for CBS ... days after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin announced their establishment of "Tranquility Base" ... from the surface of the Moon!

Remarkably -- despite all this overwhelming attention paid to every facet of the American (and Russian) space program -- down to literally "how much the rockets weighed" ... and the literally millions of broadcast dollars spent covering just one mission (!) ... in our behind-the-scenes-production meetings, more than once the "total irrelevance of NASA and this Moon crap" would be voiced by senior producers and correspondents, including--

Those intensely covering the NASA story themselves!

(I must say for the record that this was never Cronkite's point of view; to his credit -- and my priceless education in "mass media" and how to really cover the unfolding NASA odyssey -- Walter cared as passionately as I did ... and still do ... about the reasons behind these historic NASA missions ... as he tirelessly pursued what these first, fledgling forays into Space ultimately represented for Humanity ....)

Anyway, after several months' exposure to this (to me, inexplicably) cynical attitude, I was particularly struck by the ultimate absurdity of the "surreal, schizophrenic position" of some of our correspondents and producers one Sunday afternoon, in the Spring of 1969, during a special "pre-Apollo 11 production meeting" being held in our CBS Executive Producer's office. (I should add that Walter was not at this specific meeting ....)

For days, we had literally been flying correspondents and personnel into New York from all over the World -- from the CBS News Bureau-Chief in Tokyo, to folks as close-by as the "CBS Labs," in Stamford, Ct., just up the street from our Offices and Studios on the West Side of downtown Manhatten. After all the key broadcast personnel had arrived for this specific meeting, we focused on one thing: the "Big Picture" outline for how best to report, from a news and engineering perspective -- for 42 straight hours -- "the greatest story of the 20th Century"... coverage of the First Human Beings About to Walk on the Surface of Another World ... the Moon.

Or, so I thought ....

As the meeting progressed, one item that repeatedly came up was the need for exactly the right title for our impending broadcast (I suddenly became aware that even "news" had tangible "entertainment" impact on the Network's bottom line; what we would "call" our 42 hours could literally result in maybe "a million or so more (or less!) viewers ..." compared to what NBC or ABC -- the only two other national television networks in those days -- called their broadcasts of Apollo!).

So, "what should we title this unprecedented CBS committment" to "42 straight hours covering NASA ..." -- that, would guarantee more ratings for us than for our chief network competitors?!

Finally, the guy who'd flown in all the way from Tokyo, who was not only the Tokyo Bureau Chief, but a very trusted colleage and personal friend of our Executive Producer (our "Captain" -- the guy who would ultimately make all the final decisions after our meeting, and then take them "to the brass upstairs" for their Ultimate Decisions) spoke up:

"I think," he said slowly, still a bit jet-lagged, "we should call this 'The Epic Journey of Apollo 11.'"

We all looked around the office, at everyone gaging everybody else's reaction ... before anyone voiced their opinion (this was, after all, the Executive Producer's right-hand-guy; obviously, I was learning a LOT more at this tender age than just "covering the news" ...).

Finally, after much discussion -- all of it "seconding" the Executive Producer's friend -- one of the other Senior Producers, whose Special Job was attending to Walter's every need and want during all our broadcasts (so, she had definite "seniority" and thus the "freedom" to speak her mind ... and yes, she was a Senior female producer in 1969 ...) raised the first major objection:

"Uh ... I don't feel comfortable with that. How do we KNOW this is an 'epic journey?'"

* * *

In other venues, I've described at length both the "what" that NASA (or, certainly, some hidden sections of it) constantly seeks to keep from the American people -- in terms of any truly "paradigm-changing scientific data" -- and "how" they are able to continually accomplish this ... year after year ... decade after decade.

It is my firm belief that NASA (the dishonest part) would not have succeeded (or, be succeeding now ...) in this on-going, unconstitutional "mind game" -- now provably going back decades to the very creation of NASA -- if the American press had not given them essentially "a free ride" in NASA's early years ....

For, by "not taking NASA seriously" -- either in terms of its publicly-stated objectives, or the means it uses to achieve them -- by not engaging in ANY serious investigative reporting of NASA's REAL multi-layered agenda ... the press gave the Space Agency essential IMMUNITY to selectively present exactly what it wants to present ... and when it wants to present it ... and, to literally hide that which it doesn't want the press (and us) to ever know about ....

NASA did this by creating several levels of mis-direction, simultaneously -- including, deliberate deception of its own "honest" scientists and management personnel. It also overwhelmed non-technical "outside" reporters with "the illusion of openness," while constantly deflecting any real (and rare!) scrutiny with indignant insinuations that any reporter who would ask "hard questions" of NASA's underlying motives must be (oh, horrors ...) "a conspiracy theorist!"

NASA still accomplishes this effective deflection of the press, as I noted earlier, largely by simply innundating new correspondents with scores of highly complex "press kits," technical manuals, and endless "scientific" press releases (now, equally overwhelming and highly compartmentalized websites ... to the uninitiated) -- which create the "mego" (My Eyes Glaze Over) effect in most everyday reporters, especially ... those who are newly-assigned by their editors to JPL or Cape Canaveral, to cover the "historic missions" -- like the first Mars rovers ... the Deep Impact story ... or the Shuttle's "return to flight" soap opera ....

It's obvious, just from watching the NASA press conferences on satellite TV, that these "occasional space reporters" are absolutely clueless as to "what" they should be asking about the importance of any actually presented data from these missions ... and of "whom."

The only exception to this "rule" has been when NASA accidentally kills a lot of astronauts ... on television.

Then, for a brief while -- a year ... maybe two -- the Agency gets the kind of close scrutiny that other government agencies routinely receive for their egregious public "errors": like, the recent CIA debacles over accurate information on 9/11 ... and then Iraq.

But for NASA, it's ALL about "follow the money" (never about NASA's possible political intentions -- the possibility that it would deliberately deceive the public about any of its on-going missions ... and what they really found out there ...).

Obviously, none of these reporters have ever read "Brookings" -- an official NASA document, submitted to Congress (!) in 1960 -- which states flatly that (I'm paraphrasing here ...) "there are certain things the American People should NOT know ...."

"Investigative reporters" covering these breaking NASA scandels dutifully look into the Real Issues -- like, "management and budget problems," "cost overruns," "lack of priority in safety issues," the "insular NASA culture" .... All the while, the game of "hiding the crown jewels" within the Agency -- its crucial, priceless, anomalous science data on an entire solar system (!) -- goes on ... and on ... and on ... completely unnoticed and unchecked.

Even worse (if you can imagine ...), this constant mantra "we're the most open government Agency ever created ..."-- even in the face of blatant evidence demonstrating exactly the opposite -- is also believed by most of the space-savvy reporters who routinely cover NASA. I don't need to name them here -- you know who you are ....

I mean -- based on the "irrelevancy attitude" vis a vis NASA that I encountered first-hand at CBS over 40 years ago -- a government Agency obviously wasting (in many of the press' minds ...) a lot of taxpayer money, yet paradoxically strongly supported by the American people (according to the continuing polls ...) -- the press' reaction when NASA clearly, repeatedly "screws up" (like, mistaking "centimeters" for "feet," or killing its own ... through implementing the same lousy management decisions over and over ...) is--

"Well, they didn't MEAN to do it!! Don't you know that, flying in Space is a hard, dangerous business ...!?"

Because, underlying all the media perceptions of NASA -- "competant" ... "filled with screw- ups" ... "a federal welfare program for scientists who should otherwise be working on something society could really use -- like "cures for cancer," or (now) "how to better sniff out terrorist bombs in airports " -- the bottom line is that the press' perception of the Space Agency was and still is:

"What could NASA possibly have to HIDE??!! It's just 'science,' for God's sake!!"

* * *

"Just" science ....

The lengths to which societies will investigate and defend against criminal behavior in any of their institutions is directly proportional to the perceived social value of those institutions' fundamental reasons to exist.

This is why we spend hundreds of billions of tax dollars annually on the Department of Defense, equal (and now increasing ...) amounts on unaccountable "black budget" programs to fulfill the same objectives (defending our National Security) ... and less than two percent of that each year on NASA ... actually, less than a penny on each Federal dollar.

And, as the saying goes, "You get what you pay for."

For, ultimately, it's not the print reporters, or "CBS," or the other, now myriad "broadcast and Internet media" covering NASA who are to blame for secret groups in NASA--

Literally stealing an entire solar system out from under us ... over the past forty or so years!

It is us--

The American People.

We -- who, for decades (especially in the early years) -- looked on NASA's activities as simply "a Space Race" (like NASCAR ...), "cheap thrills," "escapist entertainment," and "a shot in the jingoistic arm":

"Look at us -- WE were the first to land two US guys on the Moon, for God's sake! Take that, you Godless Commies!!"

We, as Americans, have only supported the unmanned "scientific" side of NASA to the level of a few block-buster movies a year (what is it now, one major summer film is "a couple hundred million dollars ... give or take a few ...?" A "Titanic" ... "Water World" ... an "Armegeddon" ... a "War of the Worlds," or, God help us, "Deep Impact" ...?

And, like that high-bedget film -- about a rescue mission trying to stave off "another comet" from actually hitting Earth and totally destroying all of us -- the American People and their representatives, the Press, reacted to the Real Deep Impact's fireworks the other night with--

"O-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!!

"Wow!!"

"Sheesh ... look at THAT!!"

Followed by ... the screen going dark when the fireworks were over ... the comet receding into the vast emptiness of space on the official NASA website, clearly signifying "this movie's over" .... And, everyone filing out ....

Satisfied that they'd gotten their "$333 million dollars worth" of NASA summer entertainment!!

No one seems to care that the REAL story -- the simple reason we spent all that money, and sent an unprecedented NASA Mission to attack "Comet Tempel 1" -- was to learn what it is made of!! To test two huge, competing ideas ... which could change EVERYTHING we think we know about the solar system ... our true orgins ... who we once WERE ... and what may happen to us in the not-so-distant future ....

Do we know any of those answers, tonight?

Does anyone reading this -- except a few key folks at JPL (who love to read my stuff ...) -- really know ...?

Well, "the guys in NASA's back-room" (as we used to call them at CBS ...) KNOW ... like Michael A'Hearn and his fellow members of the Deep Impact Science (or, is it Silence?) Team ... and were (and still are) apparently mind-boggled and tongue-tied by what they REALLY found ... just two weeks ago ....

But, they obviously (judging from the yawning silence coming out of JPL ...) have no intention -- unless we FORCE THEM TO -- of ever showing all the rest of us what they now know ....

Backed up by a press ... who could care less!

Because--

As the media has revealed by its collective lack of any real investigative reporting on NASA for over forty years, in its opinion (supported by the tacit agreement of all us silent Americans on this ...) -- NASA's scientific data has no REAL social value to the rest of us ....

So, who cares if they "sit on it awhile?"

Stay tuned.

Sitting on any story stains the truth.

The shareholders of NASA (we the people) have lost control of the Board of Directors.

I blame interlocking Boards of Directors for this "phenomenon" (strategy). Capitalism expected the liesure class would be local - not absentee or ultra-monatine. Adam Smith never anticipated proxy voting.

What really gets me foaming at the mouth is the evidently "uncomfortable" attitude of bureaucrats when spacecraft don't submit to planned obsolescence and simply shut up

Dear Richard Hoagland :-)

So you get that freezing thing as well ? I think there's a reason
for that but I'll leave that to last cu's it's a little
unbelievable....

I'll certainly find this other BLOG ! Thanks !

I'm still considering your reply cus' I'm rather tired
(going on holiday in the next few days !)...

But I can only mention again what I DO know from my own
experience....that these drugs act to take away your
desire to get out of bad situations ! I'm biased because
I'm actually suffering from a condition bought on by a
medication many years ago... (see link at end)...

But I believe, at the moment anyway, that this medication
problem has got so serious that that industry has actually
ended up effecting PSYCHIC parts of the brain, thay 'they'
of course will not admit exist. I DON'T actually think this
is another conspiracy, just a very sad mistake, but a serious
one...(ALTHOUGH IT CAN END UP LOOKING _LIKE_ SOME KIND OF MIND CONTROL PROJECT)...I think these drugs are effecting something that is
OUTSIDE our PARADIGM..which makes it very difficult to get at
...they don't understand, niether do many other people...
...but I really do believe...that these drugs have so badly
effected the psychic well being of mankind that it's
creating 'an anomaly' in 'the force'...and hence computers
freezing and wierd things happening at certain moments (at
moments of insight, or so it seems).

We're caught in a kind of paradox....these drugs and the whole
attitude of the mental health professions are effecting things
outside of their knowledge base, so they can 'never' understand
...it can never be explained.

Now a Psychiatrist would say at this point that I'm becoming
paranoid and delusional !

I'd say ... "EXACTLY ! You would say that!"

I'm just 'a member of Starfleet'
who has noticed peculiar anomalies and is trying to put
the pieces of the puzzle together....

This could turn into a whole discussion in it'self could'nt
it ? Maybe you should contact me privately ? Maybe this is
more valuable in the open...don't know yet...have to get on
my holiday (Cornwall) :-)

I've always been interested in NASA. It's always been my dream to someday be an astronaut, and I've followed the history of space exploration with great interest for my whole life. But the more I watch and listen, the more frusterated I get. What happened to the glorious brotherhood of honest scientists I thought I knew in my youth? Things are not what they seem, and it's really starting to piss me off.

Do you have any contact information with which "we the people" can start harassing NASA on their dishonest and inappropriate behavior? Particularly for Deep Impact, by also in a more general sense? Would it even do any good to flood their mailrooms?

Or is he an Owl in Rooster feathers?

Hi Richard! Great work, good commentary! Give them some heart burn! Following incidents like Phoebos and the cultish groups going on about ships in the comets as well as your work on "artificial moons" etc. I had a persistent consideration arising about the intent of the Tempel1 mission. Perhaps it might be a revealing confrontation? A penetrating exposure of a observation post or a veiled ship?
As well, following the release of the "War of the Worlds" is strikes me funny that really we seem to be doing the very same on Mars, crashing in with mechanized devices such as rovers and orbiters. A notably strong emphasis on communications relays and observational abilities.
If there is a local struggle, of higher species or simply technology, wouldn't it make sense to have it look like we are fumbling along with low res pics and flying 70's school bus Shuttles, to not reveal our full hand? Lead "others'" to greatly underestimate our real abilities and perceptual skills. Because really, one look at a Stealth fighter and anyone could surmise we must be WAY beyond the Shuttle etc. in our Space abilities. It all smells like theatre to me, a show, an image, of bumbling en-evolved technology. Just too simplistic, to be the Truth of the matter.

It is true Richard, people don't care and NASA or NASA's scientific data has no social value. Why would people care? It is not something most of the people can relate to.

Can one really discuss spectral data analysis with a significant other or when out with the boyz? Let's face it - it is a subculture and like most of them is doomed to be limited to a very specific audience. I think here is a pretty good example of a reaction to NASA news.

NASA cancels shuttle launch because of faulty fuel sensor. Karl Rove seen fleeing the scene.
http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=1572692

“hell the fuel sensor in my buick has been broken for years. you just set the tripometer every time you fill up and remember to fill er up again at 300 miles. bunch of pin headed weenies”

or

“Because Karl Rove told someone in the press the sensor was bad?”

You get the idea...

RCH, any chance you can get back on Coast for more than a half hour and tell the millions of listeners of the latest 14 day silence by NASA? It's time we all start faxing NASA and demand these 4,500 pics that we've worked 9 to 5 (or longer) to pay for. Ok, I might understand a bit if they are still processing their findings (whatever). But they can at least release these high-res photos for the American public to look at, enjoy, and be awed at while they continue developing their conclusions. They get away with this silence murder because nobody really does much to demand otherwise. George Noory should be ontop of this too.

Frankly I’m rather appalled. You of all people should understand that the analysis of the Deep Impact data will be ongoing over the next several years. You of all people should understand that the public at large has been given photographic data unparalleled in the history of space exploration, delivered instantly to their doorstep via the Internet. You of all people could appreciate the unique moment of history we live in, where we can look over the shoulders of the new pioneers, literally see what they see. And yet you yell cover-up and liar.

I’m certainly not saying that NASA is perfect, far from it! But characterizing NASA as "killing its own," having "lousy management decisions" and covering up data is terribly cynical and smacks of a bitterness that I have difficulty fathoming.

I believe that the people on the Deep Impact project and the many other’s over at NASA deserve *some* credit for the hard work they do. Running around yelling cover-up is easy, looking at the real picture is much more difficult.

But it’s also priceless.

Sincerely;
The Odd Emperor

Hi Richard.
Your update on Deep Impact is fascinating. It seems as though every single mission that NASA undertakes these days adds wild new chapters to the overall 40-year saga!
To echo ENKI's post, I too have been wondering about Walter Cronkite. 'Would love to know where he stands on some of the issues you have been dealing with. (Especially Cydonia, HD Physics, and Brookings). It would be great if someone of Walter's stature and credibilty would have come out on your side, say, in response to the attacks on your credibilty which you sustained last year when trying to publicize the MARS rover images of a likely Crinoid fossil. (AND its subsequent and immediate destruction by the RAT!!!)

On a side note, Phil Plait's fumbling, bumbling responses to George Noorey's invitations to debate you on COAST(re: the "fossil"), have been both frustrating and hilarious! As you are quite familiar with STAR TREK, I'm sure you will understand when I say that these exchanges reminded me of "The Mark Of Gideon". Uhura's remark to Spock after an exchange with a clever diplomat's double-talk (as he attempts to conceal Captain Kirk's location) - "He's infurating, Mr. Spock! How can you stand him?"

Richard, I attended your April 1994 appearance at the X-Conference. Could you please comment on the status of the video taping of your two lectures? Are they being planned for release?

Deep Impact may never glimpse comet crater

16:49 18 July 2005
NewScientist.com news service
Stuart Clark

NASA's Deep Impact may fail to live up to its billing as the first mission to look inside a comet. Computer processing designed to correct the spacecraft's defocused camera cannot fully correct the images taken just after impact. If the situation cannot be rectified, there will be no way of seeing the newly formed crater - one of the mission's major goals.

Deep Impact sent a 370-kilogram projectile into comet Tempel 1 on 4 July. Scientists had hoped to use the flyby spacecraft to see the bottom of the resulting crater in order to glimpse the comet's interior composition. They also wanted to see the crater's sides to look for layering, rather like the geological strata on Earth. Several groups had even placed bets on the crater's size, with estimates ranging from 10 to 250 metres. Now, the prize fund could go unclaimed.

The problem lies in the High Resolution Instrument (HRI) on the flyby spacecraft. In March, mission managers discovered it was out of focus. The fuzzy images were blamed on moisture settling in the camera during the spacecraft's final few hours on the launch pad and during its flight through the Earth's atmosphere. Scientists tried to bake-out the moisture. But when that failed to fix the problem, they turned instead to image-processing techniques, which they felt could restore the images.
Dust mask

Unfortunately, the techniques only work on high-contrast images. And when the impactor struck Tempel 1 at more than 10 km per second, it raised more dust than anyone expected. This masked the surface features, rendering them too faint for computer processing to reliably correct.

But scientists are still in contact with the spacecraft and are re-calibrating HRI, says Deep Impact's principal investigator, Michael A'Hearn at the University of Maryland in College Park, US. Despite the probe now being far out of reach of the comet, NASA can use the new calibration data to reprocess the impact images. "We still hope to see the crater," A’Hearn told New Scientist.

Even if the crater images are lost, A'Hearn believes the mission was a great success. "Our view is that we went to a new place and have done exciting new science, just perhaps not as much as we had hoped," he says.

Andrew Coates, an astrophysicist at Mullard Space Science Laboratory at University College London, agrees: "This is not a failure. We scored a direct hit on a comet and have a lot of interesting data."

Dear Richard,

How can we really dismiss the "dirty snowball" model when we haven't slammed into but ONE "comet?" How do we know that Tempel 1 isn't just an oddball for any number of reasons?

Not to be too overly critical of you but you do seem to be jumping to conclusions based on very early extraordinary data!

To me, the jury is still out on this one until, if ever, we get the data we deserve!!!

Thanks!

NASA is a fool to think that I can not interpret the data if they would just RELEASE IT. Why are all the photos, spectrograms, et cetra being hidden from the planet? Does NASA FEAR letting the public see them? Obviously. Either that or NASA is confused enough not to realize that I am NOT IN THEIR STINKING BUREAUCRATIC CHAIN OF COMMAND and I could care less if those bureaucrats get another meal paid for by American taxes, get the Dan Blather treatment from the Internet, or end up hanging from street lamps.

Considering the amount of SCIENCE that NASA is actually releasing to the public, I say shut them down...and I have been a space fan since 1960. The free market can do a better job and the Internet, thanks to people like you, Richard, can (hopefully) put them in the unemployment line.

MORE: I'm pissed. That same organization didn't have any trouble releasing Ranger(?) images showing the Moon was not made of green cheese. They used to release them INSTANTLY. Now, they savor their governmental positions and refuse to release the information to me that is rightfully mine, even though the Internet makes it much easier.

They are on a frickin' power trip.
Think about it. They will NOT release the data for Tempel1 yet re-aim the damned thing in an extra-mission venture toward another comet where they will withhold MORE data. YET, they will NOT re-aim Cassini toward Iapetus even though that will provide MUCH more info of exploratory value than they are getting now. ["Saturn's rings have an atmosphere"...with all that mass and gravity, I could have GUESSED THAT.]

Keep up the good work Richard. I gotta' go before my head explodes.

>>> NASA's scientific data has no >>> REAL social value to the rest >>> of us ....

It does if you are looking up at the same sky. Do non-scientists ponder such things ? I think they do.
Besides, with (what is bravely called) Astronomy these days, it seems the more you study, the less you know :-)

>>> It is true Richard, people don't care and NASA or NASA's scientific data has no social value. Why would people care? It is not something most of the people can relate to.

You don't need a science degree to look up and wonder what a comet is made of. What would people rather have buzzing around the universe : a ping pong ball, a snow-ball or a golf ball ? I think about 80% of people grasp the science - why does NASA insist on overwhelming 'people' with 4,500 pictures and technical jargon ? Why don't the reporters ask questions connected to reality ?

NASA should remember it has a corner on the propulsion to get there - not the theoretical model of what "out there" is supposed to be like. That belongs to 'we the people'. If NASA wants to restore its wounded credibility, why not sponsor a discussion and face James McCanney and a few critics to restore their credibility ? It would make up for being wrong, all the while, throwing its weight around (for decades).

The significance of mass, density and gravity was covered somewhere between Grade 10-12. The social value is to inspire people by de-mystifying the night sky. It's the sequence that seems subject to manipulation and spin ... coloured by superstitions that everyone is conditioned to blame on Freemasonry. Freemasonry is a support cult, created by the ruling elites in 1717 and in 1876, they "lost" their secrets when the Master Masons left Freemasonry and became Shriner's - that's probably why the Masons volunteer to take the blame.

If NASA only answered to the scientists - we would all be screwed because scientists are painfully naiive and have proven themselves to have absolutely no radar for detecting political interference. They learn to fill out patent applications, but maybe that's as far as their interest in the outside world extends ?

Just havin' fun baiting scientists :-)

Careerism drives some, but just because someone does not have a theory (science) or prediction (theology) riding on the outcome and no funding hanging in the balance - the big picture is that we have an obligation to "make hay while the sun shines" and reach for the stars. Collectively.

1) How long can NASA keep this up?
if the solar system is littered with anomolies do you think they'll have to let the cat out of the bag or will the deceptions keep getting better in order to keep us in the dark?

2)Some of your comments would indicate you believe that there is more to this cover up than just the Brookings Report. If there is indeed a group that has been around for ages with this knowledge do you have any insights as to their true motivations/goals?

3) I remember years ago you said Maxwell's true equations were never published and that you were going to put them up on the web. Whatever happened with this project?

As I postulated earlier - a system failure is the cause of the delay.

All I got to say is, how bleeding convenient. Yet another system failure. A deep look at a comet.

Somewhere someone has those pictures. Somewhere someone should release them, so that we can see if they really are degraded or if the degredation is caused by filtering software.

Or is 14 days approximately how long it takes to apply degredation filtering to 4500 images?

This is simply a striking, additional example of more NASA "artful mis-direction." Aw-w-w-w-w ... the PICTURES are bad ....

You learn almost NOTHING from "looking" at this (or any) comet. You learn EVERYTHING by studying the time-lapse SPECTRA of what came out of Tempel 1 in those first few seconds from such a "high-energy, deep undergound probe!!"

So, again -- WHERE ARE THOSE KEY SPECTRA?!!

Unless ... the optical "degredation" ALSO adversely affected the spectrometer (which, curiously, is not even mentioned to exist on the spacecraft in the article -- either by A'Hearn or the writer ...).

The beat goes on ....

P.S. Notice how this is appearing in a BRITISH science publication. The American press simply don't give a damn!

The prosecution rests.

I understand your feelings of frustration…..the American people are to blame for the current apathy, whether its weapons of mass destruction, the Rove/Plame leak, NASA, the war in Iraq. But hey, everybody knows the names of the contestants in American Idol!
Americans have been brainwashed and dumbed down to the extent that they now exist in a sonambulistic state devoid of any feelings. That apathy cuts across the entire spectrum of American society and it explains their total relinquishment of the reins of power. Americans have given away the keys to the “State” quite a long time ago and now are helpless to get them back. But I cant say that the entire fault lies with the masses……The people who hold power and have held it for generations, have always treated the masses as unruly children who need to be kept in the dark and only trotted out in the open on special occasions. The masses cant understand the intricacies of science, politics, finance and, of course the socio/political implications of finding intelligent life somewhere else besides this earth of ours (so they say). If you want to start a revolution, I suggest the following: No more cheap junk food, no more sports or tv, no more jeans, t shirts and baseball caps, no more cheap gas and SUV’s and a few other basic staples of American Society. Then people will wake up and take notice. I’m not being too flipant here.

Hello Richard,

The New Paradigm: This is what the NASA/North American cabal is most fearful of....Revelation...The great 'mutation' of our current understanding of the 'known' universe. This is the door that you have opened for us to walk through.

Presently, we are beginning to realize that the vast 'anomalies' that are 'rapidly' emerging can lead to a new paradigm. This,in turn, is altering our long-held perceptions about the creation of the universe and how it actually 'works'. As this process advances, so,too, does our global consciousness. This 'quickening' is very fearful to the cabals. It throws them into tail-spins - the past 14 days is just one example.

Right now, our global society is being 'moved' on many fronts into a position where it will be prepared for the upcoming 'watershed event' of our history..the 'Great Awakening'..First Contact (note the dramatic increase in crop circles since the mid-90's).

The cabals are desperate to prevent this at all costs. Yet, they know that goal is impossible for them to achieve. Even our planet's indigenous peoples have long foretold of this upcoming event.

This very complex, mostly covert operation is now changing the way our society functions. This operation has greatly accelerated since the mid-90's.

Our covert leaders have approached this soon-to-occur event in many unusual ways that range from simple denial to strict demands to orchestrated terror. Hence, the overt panic and desperation emanating from D.C, the Cape,London,et al. The chaos before the calm.

Happily, the 'divine noose' is tightening and the cabal's days in power are nearly over. The 13,000 year old 'cosmic drama' played out by the Anunnaki and their appointed Earth minions (cabals) is at its foretold end.

The first domino is set to fall. Shock, revelation and rapture will follow.

You have the heart-felt thanks and gratitude from many Richard. Keep throwing those thunderbolts. Universe is most pleased!

Major global announcements soon....

Best Regards Always,
Thomas

Funny... according to that NewScientist.com article the images are blurred and NASA's computers are having a hard time correcting them. Yet the quote from Dr. Yeoman said: "Cameras on-board the Flyby spacecraft have shown their abilities to provide impressive imaging."
What a contradiction eh?

I'm not sure what bothers me more. The games NASA executives play, or the hundreds of JPL employees who don't have the urge to give the public what we deserve. Why don't we have a mole yet from the inside who can help us to understand what is going on?

Answer to question/statement number 1: Notice that it is immediately AFTER we quote Yeomans, re the "impressive images," that A'Hearn gives New Scientist a directly opposing statement, about "blurry pictures."

Kinda like his statement after the Swift team's "hard surface" ... followed by A'Hearn's, "no, its a soft, fluffy surface" ....

"Keep 'em off balance," seems to be their attempted strategy.

On your second question: we DO have "someone" ....

It's just that I'm trying to calibrate what this "deep inside information" has told us .... :)

Stay tuned.

You learn almost nothing, unless, of course, there was something there to see. Something astonishing. Something that, if revealed, would overshadow the spectra? Something the spectra would only serve to confirm?

That's what I'm thinking, anyway. It's the proverbial still-warm corpse of a large North American primate, only they have 4,500 of them and they can't possibly release them. They've taken out of boatload of reporters to prove that there is no Loch Ness monster, only to have one surface next to the ship and pose for pictures.

Lucky for them, they own the cameras and the reporters.

However, you are correct in that it is interesting how, in the article, they seem to be implying that the entire point of the impact was to be able to look into the crater afterwards. If that were true, I think I would have arranged to have the fly-by craft a little closer for the look afterward than for the moment of impact. Doesn't make sense, does it?

"No, really, it's better if the camera is farther away. The farther you are from the impact, the closer you are to good pictures. It's the last thing the comet will expect."

After US, China plans 'Deep Impact' mission

REUTERS THURSDAY, JULY 07, 2005

BEIJING: China is drawing up its own version of the US-built Deep Impact probe, media reported on Wednesday, two days after the American spacecraft smashed into a comet.

The third nation to launch a man into space has lofty space ambitions that include putting two astronauts into orbit this September and eventually sending up a space station and even a manned mission to the moon.

“Actually, our country has its own Deep Impact plans, it’s just we’ve never revealed them to the public before,” the Beijing News quoted Chinese astronomer Zhao Haibin as saying.

“Right now, our focus is on a moon probe, but once that’s successful, we will immediately start pursuing this plan.”

The main goal of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Deep Impact mission was to knock free primordial materials from the nucleus of comet Tempel 1 that could unlock the secret of how life formed on Earth.

China’s mission would instead be mainly aimed at protecting the planet from being hit by a comet or asteroid, Mr Zhao said, referring to the kind of doomsday scenario shown in the 1998 film “Deep Impact”, for which the US spacecraft was named.

As opposed to Nasa’s “impacting” method, China would use a “more clever” method that could be called “pasting”, he said, explaining the plan was to soft-land a craft with an engine capable of pushing a comet or asteroid off a collision course.

Mr Zhao said he and other astronomers at the Nanjing Zijinshan Observatory had tracked more than 700 space rocks potentially on track to hit the Earth by the end of June.

But China still had to overcome technical obstacles before it could send a comet collider into space, Xinhua news agency quoted Huang Chunping, the lead engineer behind sending China’s first man into space in ’03, as saying.

“We still need to make sure that scientific data could be successfully transmitted back to the Earth via the impactor’s mothership,” Mr Zhao said.

>"Keep 'em off balance," seems to be their attempted strategy.<

Yes it does look like NASA is trying to keep the public off balance. But NASA forgets one thing... there seems always to be a tendency for anything in the natural world to try and regain its balance, or learn to adapt to maintain a balance. Even if it takes eons to recover. What this means... the more NASA tries to push us off balance, the stronger our "muscles" will get to regain that balance. Which means... the more they push us, the smarter and sharper we are going to become. Which means... their attempts to push us off balance is actually making us stronger. Which means... their behavoir is actually going to lead to their own downfall. Thus, their strategy to keep us off balance is ultimately giving us more power. Their suppression-of-the-truth strategy is actually not very effective in the long-run. If they were very cunning, they'd be at least feeding us more stuff to keep us more happy, while they continue with the veils. But instead their games are so obvious and blatant, which leads me to a question for you Richard:

Are we being too critical towards NASA? Perhaps they are helping us more than we realize. They are clearly not hiding their flaws, for a teenager could probably spot the contradictions and quirks. Which makes me wonder if some at NASA are sending out subtle messages to the public, as if perhaps their own hands are tied and they are hoping the public can come and un-tie them. After all, if they truly wanted to cover things up completely, they would also be covering up all their quirks so as to never draw suspicion or attract attention towards their quirks.

But then I am reminded of the nature of corruption. Corruption is often so easy to spot, because the greed focus leaves backdoors open that they have forgotten about. And with greed comes ego, and the ego minded might assume the average public is too stupid to notice. So either this is the case.. they are clearly trying to dupe us, thinking we are too slight to notice. Or they want us to notice, in order to send out signals that they perhaps are under some even higher control.

2)Some of your comments would indicate you believe that there is more to this cover up than just the Brookings Report. If there is indeed a group that has been around for ages with this knowledge do you have any insights as to their true motivations/goals?

Background :

Between 1717 and 1876, the answer to your question was down at the Freemasons Hall. Compartmentalized, the reason behind sacred numbers, sacred words/names and sacred dates were there. However, it only suited the elites to share these secrets during periods of extensive territorial expansion. The information moved up by degrees and the result is a seamless transformation into the real purpose of secret societies : as a proxy police during the non-expansion phase : intensive consolidation of power.

The Group :

The powerful nobles in Great Britain are a statue cult which laid the foundation of our present bank-temple culture. They seek to control any incoming information to preserve the status quo. For example, if it turns out that the Egyptians had health care, it would be dark-archived or spun into some complicated building for worshipping some entity. There would be Rhodes scholarships for people researching Ancient Egyptian Insurance Companies. Some maverick and renegade political actors (mystery guides) would appear with fascinating details to help everyone lose context with alot of disconnected facts. Any culture that can do something our culture cannot must be marginalized and white-washed. He who controls the past, controls the present and future.

Brookings was not the beginning of censorship ... simply a parlour room think-tank that officialized (American style) what was always the rule : responsibility for the Great Mysteries shifted from the Pope to the King and in the US, Royal Privilege is Executive Privilege.

The British call the genre 'faction' as a blending of fact with fiction, which never challenges the establishment or reveals anything controversial at home. There is confidentiality in science - but how about social science ? How do we know that all commentators on The Great Mysteries are politically neutral ?

Arnold Toynbee ran 1/3 of the Round Table, which owns the Times, controls Oxford and founded the Royal Institute for International Affairs. Toynbee talked of nations needing a 'guiding myth' and citing France as his example, he described the 'terrifying tabula rasa' that occurs when everyone knows everything. Preserving the intellectual apartheid is the purpose of the Round Table and the Rhodes Scholarships.

In terms of cosmology, there are several hints that could be spun into instructions - sanctifying the intellectual apartheid. the two that come to mind :

For 'tis the glory of God to hide a thing, but the pleasure of a King to seek it out.
Woe to you scribes and pharisees, for ye compass land and sea to make one proselyte.

Art Bell? You mean the fellow who announced that he was quitting radio for good? How many ties did he do that? I’m supposed to hold someone like that in such high esteem that I allow him to make up new definitions to words.

Don’t make me laugh please!

What would you consider the right thing? Mr. Hoagland seems to believe the right thing is a fireworks display as apposed to real science. From his writings I could reasonably assume that he would like a circus, a dog and pony show as apposed to research. I think none of these things are virtuous.

NASA has some problems. They have become a bloated government agency without a clear mandate. Under funded and brain drained, NASA tries vainly to keep it’s over-complex Shuttle fleet flying when it’s apparent the system is woefully outdated. We have a space station in the wrong orbit, just so the Russians can dock with it. We have no system in development for going back to the moon, unlike China. We have no program to seriously explore Mars.

Those things sir are the real tragedy of NASA. It’s time we concentrate our efforts on the real issues and stop trying to chase phantoms and strange conspiracies. Those things only waste time and energy They take away from the real virtue that I believe is manifest in the exploration of space.

Dear Charles,
what you are talking about is just a novel: "Raising Atlantis" by Thomas Greanias. Link:

Some news are really just too weird, and a link Vatican - Antarctica is one of them.

Hi Massimo IT,
I came across the link today from Graham Hancock’s web site [http://www.grahamhancock.com/]. I just checked the actual site again and this ‘news’ post contains no post date. My apologies if this is indeed not actual news.. It sure comes across as news. Thanks for the ‘heads up’.
That reminds me of another book I recently heard of by H.P. Lovecraft called ‘The Mountains of Madness’ it is about the discovery in the heart of Antarctica of a city built millions of years ago by a non-human race from the stars (Book Source: ‘Not of This World’ by Peter Kolosimo).

Getting back to some of the questions about Walter Cronkite; did he ever relate the story about witnessing the UFO at the U.S. military missile launch demonstration back in the 1950's. I have heard this story repeatedly over the years with very little variation. You would have had been in a position to talk to him about this subject. Why not toss us a crumb?
Thanks in advance.

No, he never did. he never seemed to evidence an interest in the subject -- only the on-going NASa program ....

I strongly suspect this "UFO story" is bogus -- having seen it several times around the Net myself.

Odd Emporer,

NASA's principle investigators have gone BEYOND their due embargo time periods, on many occasions. For Dr. Mikey and the MOC it took a personal interest by First Lady Hillary Clinton to get the 1st PDS data dump from the MOC more than 18 MONTHS past the release date provided for in the mission specs:

http://www.commonsensecentral.com/csc_2001/hillary_clinton_visits_ccc.htm

This is a FACT I know. I was there.

The Lunar Prospector Mission that was to map the minerology of the Moon didn't even contain a small resolution camera to pair up the spectra data with ground visual data. Instead relying on some mathmatical computations to align the data with Clementine image data bank.

NASA has been less than truthful with us about Cydonia on Mars on EVERY single JPL press release about the place. EVERY ONE!

From a current NASA engineer:

http://vgl.org/vglmars.htm
http://www.vgl.org/webfiles/mars/face/newface.htm
http://www.vgl.org/webfiles/mars/face/mola/facemola.html
http://www.vgl.org/webfiles/mars/face/middlebutte/middlebutte.htm

http://vgl.org/webfiles/mars/face/catbox2.htm

Odd Emporer...NASA...

Never A Straight Answer...

and THAT is the problem, not RCH or anyone of us out here asking questions.

What do you think the lack of data has had on students all across the planet who had been following the mission as class projects? What will teachers tell them? What about non-government educators of our youth? What does a after-school counsilor tell a student about NASA's lack of forthcoming with this data?

You wonder why the youth of our nation does so poorly in math and science? NASA. period.

If we had an HONEST science program that was OPEN and brutally truthful...we could inspire our youth...instead we see NASA playing a ROVE 'Clintonesque' explanation of what went wrong.

BAH...It's all NASA 'doo doo' period. And the youth see it for what it is.

Say what you mean and mean what you say.

Don't make promises and policies you don't intend to keep and to keep the policies and promises you do make.

ACTIONS speak louder than words.

>After NASA has had 14 days to mess with those pictures, I don't think we can even trust what they give us anyway ....<

Unfortunately, that's why we're "racing the clock" on this.

Each day they have to "play with the 4500" (IF they are ...) takes us further and further from what was ACTUALLY imaged there, on Tempel 1 ... which (as Jeff said) "shocked the hell out of them."

Fortunately, we have independent data to compare ....

That, by the way, is why this process might be taking so long: to create a VERY convincing "fake," for colleagues who KNOW what they should be seeing, is VERY difficult. Especially -- if they would be using software to spot such a potential "image forgery."

So, they (NASA) ONLY get one shot at this.

That (I believe), as I said, is one major reason why this is taking so much time; the fake images have to be seamless with the REAL ones we've all seen ....

Jayson,

>How can we really dismiss the "dirty snowball" model when we haven't slammed into but ONE "comet?" How do we know that Tempel 1 isn't just an oddball for any number of reasons?<

>Not to be too overly critical of you but you do seem to be jumping to conclusions based on very early extraordinary data!<

Thanks for the questions.

And, no, you're certainly NOT being "overly critical."

The reason we're NOT "jumping to conclusions ... based on very preliminary data" is because we haven't reached any "conclusions" yet. :)

We've cited data from the non-Deep Impact teams around the world, and tried to present THAT developing picture. Based on that data, we've suggested some POSSIBLE interpretations ... But, we haven't reached ANY "definite" conclusions (although in all candor, I think the "dirty snowball model" is in definite trouble at this point ...).

In terms of the larger picture: this is NOT the first comet we've explored close-up. While this is the first comet NASA has deliberately run into, releasing such a critical cloud of diagnostic material, two prior comet "missions' -- the Borrelly Deep Space I fly-by in 2002, and the July, 1994 Shoemaker-Levy Nine collision with Jupiter -- revealed information REMARKABLY similar to our current Tempel 1 data from the network of Earth observations we've been citing.

For instance, here's the headline of a JPL Press release from 2002, re the Comet Borrelly observations:

"Deep Space 1 finds Comet Borrelly
has HOT, DRY surface -- [NASA/JPL NEWS RELEASE Posted: April 7, 2002]"

The spectacular Shoemaker-Levy Nine impacts with Jupiter in the summer of 1994 were the first major "comet surprise" for NASA: they revealed FAR LESS WATER than was previously expected ....

So, the "wake up call" -- that comets are NOT just "dirty snowballs" -- has been ringing for over a decade. Tempel 1 has just made it increasingly difficult for NASA to now NOT pick up the phone .... :)

They just don't seem to want to do it in public.

Stay tuned.

I hear your argument sir, NASA has a reputation these days of making stupid errors--that much is true. NASA is nothing more than a mass of burocrats nowadays so what do you expect? You have little argument from me on that score. I have first-hand testimony from several friends of mine who work at the Cape, one works directly for NASA. You should hear that fellow! Good lord you’d think he was working for the Keystone Cops. The others are contractors and they say similar things. I *know* how ridicules NASA has become over the years.

That’s not my core discussion here (or bashing if you believe other people.) I’m questioning Mr. Hoagland’s predilection to go after *successful* NASA programs, follow them around and screaming “cover-up” while ignoring the real problems. Mr. Hoagland; for all his good intentions has (in my opinion) frittered away a good opportunity to assist and ‘support the US space program. Rather he’s chosen to tell people about giant moon artifacts and yell cover-up. His stuff is fun to read but I don’t find it very compelling and certainly not compelling to support the agency(s) which provided Mr. Hoagland the data to bash in the first place.

Richard,

Need some help with Shuttle history. I was pretty young when the shuttle was first drawn and built, but as I recall wasn't the shuttle supposed to be taken to a high earth orbit by a re-usable launch vehicle? Weren't the solid rockets and liftoff from the cape compromises to the budget process or was the orignal thought of a re-usable ship flawed in the first place?

I agree with the assessment you made on C2C last night that the shuttle program is at it's end. Still, given the fact that both shuttle accidents were caused by things that happened at launch, one wonders if the life span of the program would be longer had it been built and flown as it was originally envisioned. I mean we'll never no for certain if both shuttle accidents were caused by design changes to accomodate 1970's politics. That said, I think it's something to consider espcially with the US Gov. looking to move manned space flight in a different and more complicated direction.

If I'm remembering things correctly, while we did save money in the 70's, I suspect we more then gave that money back when measured with what was lost in the two shuttle explosions. The tragic loss of human life aside(and how can that be measured??), losing two spacecraft as well as the time/money lost with the program on hiatus after each accident, makes me wonder what we really saved.

In my view NASA, as a government agency, needs some serious re-organization. However, like all federal agencies, they're virtually impossible to re-invent once they're created. We'd probably do better if space exploration were left to the private sector, but that's another issue altogether.

why is it still in flight then, and if it is still in flight do you not think that the inhabitants of said ship would allow the earthlings to shot anything at it?

You have done your homework. :)

The original Shuttle plan called for a two component vehicle: the Shuttle itself, which would go into orbit; and a "fly-back booster" -- essentially a giant, flying 747-type "carrier vehicle" aircraft -- which would have lifted the Shuttle to a very high altitude (and speed) before the Shuttle's own engines were ignited for the rest of the trip into orbit.

Yes, that Shuttle would have been considerably MORE expensive than the current version -- with ALL liquid fuel and highly controllable engines.

But, it would have been a LOT safer.

For one thing, without the solid rockets (which, once "lit," CANNOT be turned off!) the Challenger accident would NOT have happened.

And, without a huge, "foam-covered External Tank," the Columbia tragedy would NOT have happened! Or, the "near-miss" of a repeat (!) we just had on STS-114 ....

So, this leaves us with a major question: do we REALLY want a "safe" manned spaceflight system for getting into orbit? Or, are we so determined to "penny pinch" such a major, highly visible aspect of our National high-technology program ... that we're willing to "accept" periodic (and predictable!) human and vehicle losses!

We, as a Nation, have a LOT of soul-searching to do. And that's WITHOUT considering really NEW breakthrough space propulsion technology ... such as a long-overdue replacement for "rocket-driven" spaceflight itself!

Now, if you could just go back and tell the OTHER folks at Space.com that we ALL love and believe in "space," that would be great ....

Unless we ALL hold this Agency accountable for its actions, and can gain unfettered access to OUR data from missions such as Deep Impact -- NOTHING positive can happen with any of NASA's future plans to carry out the President's Vision (look at the current mess with STS-114 ... and the grounding of the entire Shuttle fleet -- again!)

rch, was not wrong in everything he speculates on, there is proof in previous life on mars, there is proof of some delays with nasa, but there are also proof that sometimes things take longer to look at than people at first thought, there are not hidden agendas in everything out of nasa, a movie is just a movie, or if not then where was the hidden meaning in previous movies like armageddon, and the day the earth stood still?
richard is a very smart individual, i will not deny that, but sometimes when you find delay and purposfully hidden information as in mars cities covered with dust, then you try to tell the world but are ignored or passed of as a quack, then you start to find hidden agenda's in everything else.
i have used my neme 3 times previous to the previous post, i do not have anything to do with space .com, nor do i pretend to know everything, but i read everything i can get my hands on, i look through my 10 inch telescope at least 3 times a week, i watch science and tech shows, i have taken classes on atronamy, anbd i have kept an open mind.
i listen to coast to coast everynight almost, and am amazed at some of what rch says, he is thoughtful and very intelligent, but he sometimes is wrong, there is not a secret behind all things nasa, nor is there on behind al things world gov.
if this were so and nasa was keeping things so secret does that mean that the uk, or the eu space agency would knuckle under and tell only what nasa wanted us to know, if this wee so then why did the eu space agency just last night tell of an ice lake on mars?
there will be a time when mars will be reached by man agsin and man will see that mars has these cities biult by man under the dust, and richard will be proved right , but again that does not mean there is a cover up with deep inpact, i do not believe that.
there would not have been a video out minutes after it hit if there were a cover up, just as it showed the pictures there will be a data release in due time.
what do you expect to find in the data, ohh my god there is an alien leg floating by??
as i said before do you really think that an alien presence would allow us to shoot something at it knowing as the do what it would do to their ship??
be for real and use real science, psychology, and common sense.
richard is smart enough to know how to reason these facts out, and he knows that sometimes there can be problems with equipment, ie; the eu beagle.
the tenth planet becons with info released and there is a story therre for the telling, lets keep it factual and use real science on it richard as i know you can.

Ah, where to begin? Even TO begin ...? :)

First, as someone else has noted, it is hard to respond seriously to criticism coming from "an anonymous source." That immediately tells me that the individual is lacking in simple curtesy -- if not courage! -- to stand behind his or her comments. So, how can such tactics be taken seriously?

The U.S. Constititution, in the Bill of Rights, listed first and foremost the right to "confront" one's "accuser." By posting "anonymously," my MANY "accusers" effectively remove that right. So, their "criticisms" deserve to be ignored ... as the appropriate "response."

One can also easily notice that such criticisms are ALWAYS general:

>"However, since his theories are crap, and proven so my [sic] REAL scientists, he is as hypocritical as NASA as far as assuming fault."<

What "theories?" What "real scientists?"

Again, generalizations -- which cover EVERYTHING -- are kinda hard to be responsive TO .... :)

Finally, if I was REALLY "insecure," I'd eliminate ALL such "criticism." That's the beauty of the web: a keystroke, and the Universe is changed .... :)

But, I don't.

With the (rare) exception of the occasional rant which demeans our overall conversation here with vile language, or really below-the-belt personal attacks, I allow all other "criticism" to stand as written ... as I have every confidence that serious folks can discern what is simply "blowing smoke" ... and what is edifying.

As to being "wrong": most of what we have been investigating over the last twenty or so years has not reached ANY appropriate or scientific "conclusion." There ARE NO official scientific studies on most of the research we've been following, certainly NOT from NASA (where are the formal analyses or published scientific papers on "the Face," for instance -- except from us?).

Press releases and pronouncements out of NASA HEadquarters or JPL, of course, DON'T count.

That's been the MAJOR problem: it's kinda hard to be "wrong" ... when the inquiries are still on-going, or the official agencies REFUSE to conduct any real science!

As to some of our "political" predictions, they are (and always have been) clearly separate from our technical and scientific conclusions.

When in the past we have forecast, for instance, that NASA would "launch or land" on a given day -- based on the celestial alignments model -- that POLITICAL forecast was/is ALWAYS subject to change by NASA itself. On these curious rituals, we're ALWAYS reading their "playbook" from the OUTSIDE; we're trying to figure out what the ritual might be intended to "accomplish" ... and, since we're truly guessing (no one has slipped us an actual "playbook"), we can be plain wrong ... or (when we've gone public BEFORE the event) the "ritualists" can actually CHANGE their "plan" ... to make us APPEAR "wrong."

The bottom line is, as opposed to the science, it would be silly to list every time that NASA changed their play in these bizarre, arcane rituals ... to make us "wrong."

You could just as easily, based on past performance, say that NASA was "wrong" (!) -- in changing its ritual game plan ... to another game plan! :)

Again, on the science, the situation is TOTALLY different.

I would challenge ANYONE to bring an example of where are are clearly now WRONG on ANY of the science.

NASA claiming the Face is "just a pile of rocks" doesn't count; NASA has ALWAYS claimed this, from day 1 ... despite significant outside analysis over the last 20 or so years, from a LOT of independent scientists.

Such a list of where we're "wrong" -- on the science -- should be a fascinating list .... But for obvious reasons, it CANNOT be submitted "anomymously" .... :)

Richard, right on...

In fact, I live in St Christopher, Caribbean, West Indies....

Lesser Antilles...

The point?

I am stating on the record everything I've said in these blogs and from the heart, I believe everything I've said to be true...

...Richard...even that H.G.Well and the 33 thing... ;) till it's proven wrong in this case, more than two witnesses, didn't the bible say that?

Anyone posting negative things to this blog anonomously is frightened of something...

What are you hiding Anne Nonny Muss?

come on, lets all show ourselves...

I'm here...

Who, what, how, why, where are you???

And another thing... while I'm ranting...

bring the tempel 1 spectrograph picture and when you have that, yep you can rib me, but till then...

...staying tuned...

I'll reiterate:

Nasa is distracted by having too many little projects. They need to get focus and concentrate on one thing at a time ! Not that there’s anything wrong with multitasking, they just can’t do it !
I’m sorry to say they need to go back to school “ Space 101”

One Program at a time!

After STS114, I feel they lost to right to flight!

richard, i did not hide or take the name of a previous poster, i have always used my own name and always will, i have nothing to fear from you or any other
real science, this is the study of actual data collected with known means that brings theories into play thsat therefor can be tested upon and other test made from there until you have a real workable theory that you can present the world with that will hold up to main stream critisism.
where does your theory on deep impact come from?
if they did not release the data yet it surely did not come from the data created with the impact.
it must have come from the dep imature mind of a person seeking to force his opinion on others.
if you tryuely wanted to talk science there is plenty to talk about until the actual data comes out so all can study it.
I am not out to get you on this as i said before i agree with a lot of what you say when there is proof in the pudding so to speak,
mars as a place man has inhabited before.
science is not perfect as we all know, if that were so the the pharohs of old would all be gods as their scientist said they were.
my theories are no more rediculous than any other, i have used data that is available to anyone in the world, check out the facts for yourself.
but that is neither there nor here because unlike you , i do not care if someone believes them or not.
mine are long range theories that take centuries to really know about for sure, i will be long dead and i am sure it will not matter to my corps.
but i am not trying to tell people that my opinion is the only one, nor do i want to because that is the sure way to hide real truth from the light of day, how many scientist have discovered something without moments of long suffering, most needed outside influence to aid them in their discoveries.
i do not care if you do not like me, you can call me anything you would like to, it will actually make me smile to see your efforts.
as i said before you are very intelligent, use this to think things thru completely before you you sound stupid and immature again, you do not have the data from deep impact, therefor you cannot decide what is the result of the mission until you have the data. get the data and then prove your point, show real science to your findings, we have enough of the thin air science in the world right now, that is why the usa is falling behind the rest of the world in tech and capabilitie area.
there are billions of worlds in outer space and we all know somewhere there is life out there.
it was there before use, we were there before, and we will be there again.
we all know this, we do not have to grasp straws from the air and say things like there is proof of life but nasa is hiding it from me because they do not want the great richard c hogland to see it, and prove themselves wrong and me right.
there is a ship being made right now that will tavel in the solar system with in 10 years, notice i did not say in orbit, it will use gravitational generators to produce power, it will rise up into space at anyspeed between 1-2500 mph, there will be no need for re-entry shielding.
whether this is reverse engineering or not i do not know, but i have been in the same bldg with this technology.
it is coming, i know it to be true because i have seen it tested, this is real science, and of course it is hidden right now, who wants the chinese to get the plans from us before we can use it and make themselves the power to be caught up to.
i did not pull this from thin air, i have the fact of actually seeing it.
as i have other facts that i study before i make my theories.
richard, face on mars =truth
cydonia on mars=truth
primitive space shuttle=truth
your theories on titan = truth
even the fossils yo saw on mars =truth.
but the rocks were not space shuttle debris, they were rocks.
go to the painted desert of america, you will see the same shapes there.
even the color of mars and the fact that the dust has iron in it leans toward the life on mars theory= truth
but a hidden agenda over the deep impact project...
you are simply gathering straws from thin air until the real data is released.
and i am not the same one spouting the your still full of shit richard comment 2 up from this one, i have now made 6 post on your blog.
you are not the simpleton that i suppose tha poster is suggesting, but you are not the scientist yo are claiming if you are not using real science to base your claims.
(sic sic sic sic ) is childish.
i would have thought there would be a better response from you than that.

trh... I was curious, a lot of people are sniping Richard right now, without bringing any better hypothesis or starting their own blog with investigations...

I'm smelling a fowl rat here...

Why are so many people jumping to dismiss some legitimate claims and questions???

of course I surmise that most dismissing these excellent points brought up by Richard, are themselves either part of the problems or are trying to mislead and misdirect...

CASE POINT...

CNN/FOX NEWS/ET ALL USA MEDIA

Natalie Holloway...???

PLEASE

what are you all talking about...

GET OVER IT!!!

She is sadly missing, so are Millions of freaking American Teenagers... Why this ONE and why since end of MAY have we been so duped into taking up valuable reporting time when...

Temple 1 mission data is missing!

Shuttle crew is in problems...

Weather is freaking across USA and WORLD!!!

IRAQ war!!!

Suicide bombers declaring war on Europe!!!

The list goes on...

And the media is obsessed with ONE freaking case down in Aruba...

Clearly if I was paranoid I would say that the media distraction on this story was intended to do just that.... SIMPLY A DISTRACTION.

Now TRH show me your BLOG that debunks all Richards current claims on Temple one and I'll read it...

But also not liking to really repeat myself...

Here is another blog I entered this morning on another one of Richards Blogs...

Enjoy...

Crypto, to answer your question briefly before I wade into IOS Cisco code this AM :-/

"I'm curious why the list of coincidences makes you ooh and aah. All numbers reduce and free association games are a great pastime.

Word puzzles are the hallmark of the English language - the #1 pastime (only displaced by the Internet) and the coincidences were put there by people who also loved word-play and making the alphabet dance.

Numbers can be used to communicate across time and distance, but I'm curious why people make the leap to assume certain numbers foretell the end of the world.

...WHY?

What religion would the UN be if it had a REPLICA Ark of the Covenant?

AND WHY does the US admin support Isreal so much???

The ark is to be revealed on August 14th, I seem to remember quite a lot of OTHER coincidental happenings around this date too...

If RCH wanted to impose his opinion on others, we would all be happily reading his opinion in his web-site. Instead, he has opened up this Blog, so you and I get to participate. Co-creatorship.

Results of the mission are known to insiders, but being with-held from its patrons, so, there is an issue of ownership and then there is the issue of transparent science. Keeping the data until January will mean that the Agency will no longer be trusted as politically neutral.

Next to putting on airs and academic pretense, the biggest insult to the thinking man is : trickle down information. Especially with "thin air" science.

Keeping information from Americans is not the same thing as keeping information from the Chinese.

If we're falling behind, it's because Black Ops is incompetent. Perhaps they should re-think their praetorization and self-selection methods.

Casting the same level of suspicion on individual Americans as rival nations might have worked after a World War ... but today ?

That's the norm ... and it makes people wonder : where, exactly, is Mil Intel drawing their borders ?

Exactly my point too!

The borders are being drawn around all the sleeping sheeple...

Hence this blog is starting to wake people up to their stinky and smelly little scam...

Too late?

We'll see >:)
