Deep Impact ... Desperate Delays ...? Updated 9:51PM
After a week of NO new updates -- suddenly ... the official JPL Deep Impact website has sprung to life again, with ... NEWS!
First -- look -- there's a new image on the website!
Wait ... ah, actually it's not "new" .... It's merely a distant "Hi-Res" frame from the same Fly-by spacecraft "movie" of the (now) old July 3rd Impact, released a few hours after the Impactor struck the Comet ....
Ah, but look, they've rotated it 90-degrees ... so it looks new (well, to someone not following the Mission very well ... like maybe the entire press corp!) ....
And that, of course, is all that counts:
The "illusion" of new data being presented to the tax-paying public ... you know, the folks who spent $333 million dollars for "another view" of this same image .... (and, notice how the "new" image is actually blurrier than the old view. I guess that's to keep it consistent with the "new" story suddenly coming out of the Deep Impact folks, that "the camera blur is really hopeless now and can't be fixed ... so don't actually expect any new images at all!"
But, see ... they've added another fascinating, multi-layered caption -- "First Contact" (now, there's a preganat title ...) -- which (finally) goes on to explain that "peculiar geometry" of the bright "flash" seen in the original image. It's, they say, "a result of light given off at impact saturating some of the pixels in the camera's imager ...."
Boy, I'm glad that's cleared up!
Of course, with "4500" really new images "somewhere in the bowls of JPL" which, except for a few priests (oh, sorry ...) "scientists," no one outside the project have even seen as yet ... why they're "scraping the bottom of the barrel" and publishing the same darn frame ... again ( remember, just rotated) is getting very puzzling ....
Certainly, to the millions of folks who still believe that NASA would NEVER ... actually ... lie to them .....
So, I'm sure there must be some suitable, scientific explanation for this "apparent recycling" of the same image ... again ... from "someone" officially knowlegable on the Project ....

I mean, really ... "anyone" -- like, maybe that janitor over there ...?
He looks like he'd know "something" about "how difficult it is to go through '4500 blurry digital images' and find even one new one... suitable for publishing" .... His explanation can't be any weirder than what we've been getting from the actual "scientists," now can it?!

The successful "mid-course correction" of the Fly-by spacecraft, carried out (as we reported a couple days ago) on July 20th.

As the official press release notes, this will bring the surviving half of the Deep Impact spacecraft back past the Earth on December 31, 2007 ... prior to a formal decision on the part of NASA Headquarters at that time regarding where to send it next ....
In fact, what it really says is that "they're putting the entire spacecraft on E-bay!" Just so YOU can participate in a real space mission ....

Still laboriously going through those ~4500 (now bad ...) images from this Mission (not to mention all those extremely boring spectra ...) -- and they're still thinking far ahead ... all the way to 2007 .... so they can offer the opportunity to someone else to also take more close-up "blurry images" ... of some other unknown place ... that, of course, they then won't be able to reveal to anyone outside the Project ... because, they'll also be "too hopelessly blurred" for public viewing ....
How do they come up with this stuff??! I mean, where else these days can a tax-payer get so little ... for so much?!

Having had a few hours now (from early this morning, at about 3:00 AM!) to do some serious thinking about NASA 's fascinating "offer" -- to essentially put the entire Deep Impact Fly-by spacecraft "up for open bid" -- here are some of my immediate reactions.
NASA's Director of Solar System Division, Science Mission Directorate, Andy Dantzler, made the "offer" in the latest NASA press release on the Deep Impact Mission. Specifically, NASA states:
"... all investigators interested in using the Deep Impact Flyby Spacecraft for further science investigations must submit proposals to the 2005 Discovery Program Announcement of Opportunity for a Mission of Opportunity.
"All proposals for use of the Deep Impact spacecraft will be evaluated for science merit and feasibility along with all submitted proposal for Missions of Opportunity," he said. "The spacecraft is being offered as is. Proposers must include mission management and spacecraft operations in the total proposed funding [emphasis added]."

Ok, does the phrase "buyer beware" ring a bell with anyone on that ...?
I mean, whoever is going to officially "propose" to take over new management and science operations of this spacecraft is entitled to a "full disclosure" of exactly what its capabilities still are, right? But, unfortunately, that's precisely what NASA doesn't seem to want to tell anyone about this Mission at this point!
Does anyone have a serious problem with this ... or is it just me?
A brief review:
Just hours before the successful targeting of the Impactor, the night of July 3rd, JPL Project Manager, Rick Grammier, gave an interview to The Washington Post. In it he admitted that they had months earlier detected "a problem with image sharpness in the hi-res camera system" aboard the Deep Impact Fly-by spacecraft in space, but that the Mission engineers "had devised a mathematical technique to correct the problem."
In fact, Grammier reported, "we get somewhat better quality [now] than before [launch] ...."
The "nasty surprise," of course, came about two weeks after this assessment and Deep Impact's "big finish," when the on-line science journal, New Scientist, after talking with Deep Impact Principal Investigator, Michael A'Hearn, reported that--
"... NASA's Deep Impact may fail to live up to its billing as the first mission to look inside a comet. Computer processing designed to correct the spacecraft's defocused camera cannot fully correct the images taken just after impact [emphasis added] ...."
But, in an even more inexplicable twist, just ten days after seeing all "4500 close-up images" taken with this specific camera of Comet Tempel 1 -- but four days before the dismal New Scientist report, another member of the Deep Impact Science Team, Dr. Donald Yoemans, boasted that the Deep Impact cameras--
"... have shown their abilities to provide impressive imaging [emphasis added]."
In any other context, this would be viewed as "MAJOR contradictions among principal witnesses to critical information"; similar crucial contradictions among key White House personnel seem to now be forming the basis for a developing Federal indictment for perjury in the much-discussed "Carl Rove/Valeri Plame Affair," being avidly covered in all the mainstream media this week ....
But, equally blatant contradictions surrounding a $333 million-dollar NASA Mission -- and whether its data is now "wortheless" or "... impressive" -- not to mention, who's to blame if somebody really screwed up ...?!
And, nary a ripple in the press ....

Of course, without revealing the actual raw Hi-Res camera data -- both on the previous aberration problems, as well as the "fix" that Project engineers devised -- any scientific team proposing to take over Deep Impact mission management at this point would be effectively "buying a pig in a poke." And to do so, without seeing the actual raw imaging data after Impact, would be just ludicrous.
Of course, no one in their right mind would submit an official proposal to NASA under those circumstances ... and NASA ought to know that -- shouldn't it?
Oh, and I almost forgot:
We haven't seen a frame from the critical spectrometer data ... post-Impact!
How would any serious scientist, or scientific team, be able to propose a realistic budget for "mission operations," "science acquisition," "fly-by parameters," or any of a hundred other essential aspects for any new cometary (or planetary) observations ... without knowing how both these critical science systems -- the cameras and the spectrometer -- actually performed at the moment of critical Impact ... now almost three weeks ago?!

For those interested in putting an end to this obvious farce ... we have assembled a MAJOR list of national media, political representatives, the White House and other important contacts -- which will be essential in the upcoming campaign we're now planning to direct some REAL attention to this problem.

Look at the light produced by Impactor blasting on the surface, so they claim, there.. There's is the usual digital censorship there... The disc-like horizontal effect *IT IS A FAKE* ! Look carefully there, you an see that it was digitally applied and merged there to cover up something else, obviously, as they usually do. There is more digital censorship done by their AI-driven censoring programs but the ground-zero zone where the Impactor hit shows that fake feature which I bet the majority of you thought was nothing impossible and/or unusual... Look better at the image, and maybe do some analysis in the frequency domain and you will clearly see what is going on there...

As for my picking the images, well you are astute! I regret that my recent introduction to Photoshop has not provided better results, but I'm learning. Honestly. Now I'm privy to many convestations - not intensionally, but no one takes much notice of me. They are all busy trying to come up with explanations for the stuff they are getting back.
You go on about conspiracies, but you are wrong. The truth is much simpler and sadder. You see these big wigs are products of the modern educational system - finally bering fruit. They feel really good about the amount of data returned. However, interpreting it is a bit of a mystery. There are several committies set up to find some way of making something out of all those 1s and 0s. I've seen several interpetations which look all the world like the Snoopy dog - repleate in WWI flying cap, but there is no way any of them think that is fit to release. So some of the more able fellows have asked me to post something on their highly user unfriendly web site. Thus, I'm afraid some of the images got turned around. I just could not get them to accept shaper images, since they claim they look fine as is - they refuse to get too close to their work. They are federal employees after all!
I've been looking into getting a few more people like my self who received our education back when students actually got grades, including red marks and even Fs!. It will take a while to assemple my team, so that's why the 06 date is bandied about.
Sorry aboutthe delay .. oh and thakes for the raise! Some of the $333 million was budgeted for folks like myself.

There are far superior ways of 'manipulating' an image using Photoshop, which even an amateur can learn in a short period of time. If you're claiming they've overlayed another image on top to obscure something else underneath, then from a professionals point of view they might as well have stuck a black bar across the image with the word 'censored' in big white letters.

I am really starting to think that all of this secrecy and delay can"t just be about comets being rocks rather than dirty snowballs. There has to be something else going on. Countless other scientists have lived through scientific revolutions and manage to survive gracefully. Do you think that TEMPEL may have revealed some ARTIFICIALITY? If, as you and Van Flandern claim, this is part of the remains of an exploded planet X, it may have housed our solar system's first civilization. Perhaps we are seeing the influence of BROOKINGS here. The way to combat BROOKINGS is with a FREEDOM OF SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION ACT passed by Congress ! We need to study it before we release it ... usually means careerism.
One possibility : NASA needs time to check the incoming data against the published (dirty snowball) opinions of NASA insiders. Specifically, the priesthood who know that comets aren't dirty snowballs, but marginalize and black-list those who don't buy-in to the dirty-snowball theory.
In fact, the dirty snowball litmus test has been a preferred method of controlling the genius minds, who might reach different conclusions than the profit-takers. NASA has systematically limited the career options of free-thinkers and marginalizing any issue that threatens to jump the pre-determined priority list.
Reminds me of their underwater volcano estimates - though I don't have the statistics of NASA's guess and what they said about people who guessed higher ... and what the actual number turned out to be, once they finally counted. We have ocean warming - caused by volcanos ? We could have had 20 or 30 extra years of data to understand it.
Apparently NASA estmiated there would be about half as many volcanos underwater (low elevation) than on land (higher elevation) ... go figure.
I found that the spectra will be relase at some meetings in the second week of August and another in the first week of September.
Public release of the information probably at the time of that second meeting. No release of the raw spectral data.

As to Space Science here, I haven't seen much depth published or disclosed, but I will check more. Their double speak aside, the principles are sound and good. A Freedom of Scientific Information Act would be a powerful tool to enforce accountability and true transparency. rob: Photoshop filters are nice but are far from the most advanced out there.. and the digital censoring conspiracy groups use is pretty complex and precise, it can usually mimic true details up to the point that some details in many images are just fakes to not let you see what's really there, the real data gets morphed and hidden by fake details.
Public available images of Iapetus that Mr. Hoagland analyzed show similar digital censoring going on here and there, where it's possible to detect something applied there, which I already tried to point out.
Take a look at the Clementine pictures about our Moon and you will see what I am talking about. Digital censoring AI program there was either in a beta-stage and still full of bugs or someone inside conspiracy groups made it misbehave and not work correctly, so you see a lot of structures being clearly hidden and some parts of them that can be recognized more or less despite the heavy filtering processes occurred when the ultra high-resolution originals got demolished down to pathetic public images available on that US Navy server that claims to be reading directly from digital tapes the original raw data...

What other kinds of pictures do you think are available?? I agree the spectra would be interesting but photography would all look about the same one would suspect. Hitting a comet with a projectile would look pretty much the same no matter what angle you looked at with a picture.

Based on these observations, it now seems to me more than likely that the conventional minds of the Space community are really and truly simply baffled by events, as opposed to a more conspiratorial scenario. • Tempel 1 has a low-eccentricity orbit. Therefore its charge imbalance with respect to its environment at perihelion is low. (It is a “low-voltage” comet.) Electrical interactions with Deep Impact may be slight, but they should be measurable if NASA will look for them. They would likely be similar to those of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 prior to striking Jupiter’s atmosphere: The most obvious would be a flash (lightning-like discharge) shortly before impact.
• The impactor may form a sheath around it as it enters the coma, becoming a “comet within a comet.” The plasma sheath could interfere with communications in the same way as experienced by the Space Shuttle during reentry.
• Internal electrical stress may short out the electronics on board the impactor before impact. That could compromise the guidance system and the success of the mission.
• More energy will be released than expected because of the electrical contributions of the comet. (The discharge could be similar to the “megalightning” bolt that, evidence suggests, struck the shuttle Columbia).
• The electrical energy will be released before impact.
• X-rays will accompany discharges to the projectile, which will not match X-ray production through the mechanics of impact. The intensity curve will be that of a lightning bolt (sudden onset, exponential decline) and may well include more than one peak.
• If the energy is distributed over several flashes, more than one electrical crater on the comet nucleus could result – in addition to any impact crater.
• Any arcs generated will be hotter than can be explained by mechanical impact. If temperature measurements are made with sufficient resolution, they will be much higher than expected from impact heating.
• The discharge and/or impact may initiate a new jet on the nucleus (which will be collimated—filamentary—not sprayed out) and could even abruptly change the positions and intensities of other jets due to the sudden change in charge distribution on the comet nucleus.
• The impact/electrical discharge will not reveal “primordial dirty ice,” but the same composition as the surface.
• The impact/electrical discharge will be into rock, not loosely consolidated ice and dust. The impact crater will be smaller than generally expected .
• An abundance of water on or below the surface of the nucleus (the underlying assumption of the “dirty snowball” hypothesis) is unlikely.

If this were any other specialized field of work, especially IT, these guys at NASA would be history in a heartbeat. If you took pif's comments seriously I wouldn't hesitate to describe you as a "mentally challenged" person (my socialist buddies have informed me recently that "nerf-humping retard" is no longer considered `polite' in the USA).
RCH...... PLEASE get Noory to keep you one for more than half an hour. It's so silly all the time when important topics are often given a half-hour (really 20 min) then hours of open lines. And then virtually no follow-up for weeks. A lot would change by one or two simple moves by Coast, such as bringing you on for the first hour for an entire week, to continually push/encourage people into action towards NASA. There is a big difference between creating a wave of action that builds and becomes powerful, versus one tiny mention on the show which is soon forgotten and ignored over the weeks until the next update. Coast has such amazing powers at their fingertips, but it is rarely harnessed. Instead, it's the usual loop-de-loop tour around the paranormal book section of a chain bookstore.
NASA witholding info is one thing. The mainstream media NEVER following up and demanding this data is another. But I am rather ticked off that astronomers and scientists around the world never make these demands as well. Something is wrong with this picture when virtually only one fine person, Richard Hoagland, is the one person pointing out and demanding change. Richard's efforts are truly rare... mainsteam media ignores the issues, scientists around the world also ignore the issues as well. We should all give Richard an ongoing boost, for he has to balance so weight much upon his shoulders that so few others do. At least he is taking responsibility and not keeping quiet whereas so many others are.
For what its worth, I got another reply to a second email I sent to NASA. I suggested that they should release the data so that more scientists out there could analyze it while they are busy doing their own analysis. (The more the merrier!) I also told them that they don't need to be embarassed by their findings (just in case they were) and that's its not that big of a deal if it looks more like an asteroid than a dirty snowball.
Anyway, here's her reply:

And I promise, sitting amongst the scientists, they are not hiding anything. They are busy trying to get their work done.
There is nothing to be embarrased about... it's not that we expected the comet to look like a dirty snowball... we use that as an analogy as that is an "everyday" item that people are familiar with... Typical conversation:
What is a comet? Something very dirty, with some ices, how much we don't know, etc, etc...

I'd say that two things might have happened: #1 The conspiracy groups behind the giant cover-up going on for well over than 60 years have decided to change their strategy to the public and that's the result ; #2 Although #1 could still probably be true there might be something more about the one that replied you, either directly authorized to do so or not... that might be someone from inside conspiracy groups (or maybe not) that tries to deliver some information..the ones that allowed the AI-driven digital censoring programs not working correctly 100% and being bullet proof which resulted in many details left here and there on many images data in the last few years way more than ever before.... this could be the reason why you got such an answer from them.. or it might just be their new strategy to fool people more and more (to calm you and whoever tries to complain down by telling that everything is normal and there is nothing to hide and such... a strategy they actually used in the past about other "issues" in other sectors...). What's for sure is that conspiracy groups have the technology to monitor way more than what the usual secret agencies can, they surely know about this blog and who everyone writing here really is, and I bet some of them have written here already.

This is another way of saying, other scientists might release interpretations that would contradict whatever bullshit we might come up with. It's very important that we be allowed to set the standard of bullshit. If someone else "scoops" us, then we've got to explain why our interpretation is different than theirs. And this just isn't how we like to work, see. We don't follow up nobody, and we don't explain, or defend. Our word is Law. Everyone else has to prove us wrong.

Overview
Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter uses a new spacecraft design provided by Lockheed Martin Space Systems that is smarter, more reliable, more agile, and more productive than any previous Mars orbiter. NASA Announces Deep Impact Future Mission Status
As NASA's Deep Impact flyby spacecraft prepares to execute its sixth trajectory correction maneuver, program managers at agency headquarters in Washington are investigating future options.
Today's scheduled burn places the spacecraft on a trajectory to fly past Earth in late December 2007. The maneuver allows NASA to preserve options for future use of the spacecraft.
"This maneuver will keep the spacecraft in the vicinity of the inner planets, thereby making the task of tracking and communicating with it easier,” said NASA's Director of Solar System Division, Science Mission Directorate, Andy Dantzler.
Dantzler announced today that all investigators interested in using the Deep Impact Flyby Spacecraft for further science investigations must submit proposals to the 2005 Discovery Program Announcement of Opportunity for a Mission of Opportunity.
"All proposals for use of the Deep Impact spacecraft will be evaluated for science merit and feasibility along with all submitted proposal for Missions of Opportunity," he said. "The spacecraft is being offered as is. Proposers must include mission management and spacecraft operations in the total proposed funding."

Just hours before the successful targeting of the Impactor, and subsequent ballistic impact, the night of July 3rd, JPL Project Manager, Rick Grammier, gave an interview to The Washington Post. In it Grammier admitted that NASA had, months earlier, detected "a problem with image sharpness in the hi-res camera system" aboard the Deep Impact Fly-by spacecraft, but that the Mission engineers "had devised a mathematical technique to correct the problem."
Grammier reported, "we get somewhat better quality [now] than before [launch] ...."
A "nasty surprise" came about two weeks after Grammier's July 3, 2005, assessment, and Deep Impact's "big finish," when the on-line science journal, New Scientist, after talking with Deep Impact Principal Investigator, Michael A'Hearn, reported that --
"... NASA's Deep Impact may fail to live up to its billing as the first mission to look inside a comet. Computer processing designed to correct the spacecraft's defocused camera cannot fully correct the images taken just after impact ...."
But, in an even more inexplicable twist, just ten days after having access to all "4500 close-up images" taken with the now suspect camera of the Deep Impact flyby camera -- but four days before the dismal New Scientist report, another member of the Deep Impact Science Team, Dr. Donald Yoemans, boasted that the Deep Impact cameras --
"... have shown their abilities to provide impressive imaging [emphasis added]."
In any other context, such announcements coming from the same agency in the space of two weeks would be viewed as "MAJOR contradictions among principal witnesses to critical information." (Such inconsistency is similar to the crucial contradictions among key White House personnel about the details regardintg the facts pertinent to a developing Federal indictment for perjury in the much-discussed "Carl Rove/Valeri Plame Affair.)
So, the cameras failed to produce adequate pictures of the Comet Tempel 1 impact, and the 4500 images have NOT yet been released, and it seems that the images will NEVER BE RELEASED, NASA now offers an admittedly crippled spacecraft, for paid usage, to the highest bidder!!!
Such shenanigans equate to fraud and deceptive trade practices!!

I just sent some questions to the Deep Impact site...below is a copy of what I sent and their pat response after sending it:
Where are all the pictures that were taken and why are are only a few posted? Also, why, if it is true that the cameras and instruments are not working, is NASA/JPL wasting time and resources manuervering the craft for another mission? If this mission was truly funded by taxpayer monies, why are we getting conflicting reports on the reliability of the craft and its equipment? Would it really be that terrible if it were known that Tempel 1 was not a comet, but instead, a fragment of a planet that was once a member of our solar system?
I am a concerned taxpaying citizen who would like more truthful information.

If the areas of high contrast (AKA image details) had been wiped out by an intervening layer of dust, would it not be possible that the "deconvolution" algorithm could fail?

I am looking forward to the release of the discovery you hinted at last night and suspect it will prove to be an integral piece of the puzzle regarding the existance and origins of the Martian Ruins and Ruins on the Moon. It may also explain NASA's refusal to send manned missions anywhere but on orbital bus rides around planet Earth or to summer camp on the International Space Station.

Spacechip: Deconvolution won't solve much there if lenses were really damaged. Actually if you got damaged lenses and such you won't be able to obtain any really high resolution and the best you can do is to use some very complex interpolation technique in a hope to reconstruct some of the missing data by replacing it with the one that was highly likely to be there, which is not a perfect reconstruction process anyway when a lot of noise is going on. It can be acceptable for human eyes but not for some real scientific purposes where you need every single bit to match real frequencies of objects out there the light of which got captured by the lenses..
Obviously they got unknown techniques/algorithms way beyond what we can study on public available engineering/DSP/digital imaging/signal theory books and such, but it's sure that they never got any real issues with their equipment out there near Tempel-1, simply because that thing either has more than a bunch of lenses and systems they claim it to have (as usual) or even because that thing might be able to self-repair itself if got hit during an attack---don't think that that's sci-fi because it's not. Nanomachines technology it's fully functional already and so it was many years ago, although they want you to think otherwise(it's not fully functional for the general public yet).

I do.
The "contrast" in an image is arbitarary ... being a function (in part) of the human visual system. As long as there is one DN (digital number) between two pixels, you have "contrast" --which can then be exaggerated as much as desired so the human eye "sees" lighting differences between different parts of the same scene.
The real trick to this "deconvolution technique" is in something called the PSF -- or "point spread function." In my use of deconvolution programs, setting the PSF to different values (as opposed to the computer finding the average value from the image itself) results in strikingly different results - only one ofm which is the 'real" image ....
Ultimately, in such a "hands on" approach, the computer tries a wide range of PSF values ... until it finds one which works for that image (or, even a portion of the image).
In fact, the LOWER the contrast across an overall image, the better the chosen PSF will work for the ENTIRE scene!!
Having used these programs on desktops, and had excellent results in reasonable periods of time (they're basicly, using "trial and error" ... so there's a LOT of number crunching the computer has to go through!) it's not hard to imagine what one could accomplish using a MUCH more capable machine -- such as those at NASA!
In other words, this "excuse" -- "we can't fix the images" -- is simply that: just another NASA "excuse" to explain "why" we CAN'T see those close-up Tempel 1 images ....

We KNOW the lenses and mirrors on the cameras and spectrometer were TOTALLY UNDAMAGED because of the "look back shots" that JPL released at the following morning's press conference! If there had been ANY "sandblasting" of the mirrors or other exposed optics ... we would have seen it in that shot as a "haze of light over the entire image." And, we DIDN'T.
Ergo: the problem is NOT with "a damaged optical system."
It's with "a damaged POLITICAL system" .... :)

I'm not too familiar with the details of space probes, so I was wondering... how do the focusing mechanisms on Deep Impact work anyway? Is it actually just a fixed focus lense or simply focused to infinity all the time? Or does it have some kind of built-in autofocus? If the latter, then why would they have this? My experience has been that once an object is "pretty far away", the same focus setting works for it just as well as it does if I point my camera at the moon (essentially infinity).
If the former (fixed focus), then I don't see how it could go out of focus unless it was damaged and a lense was moved from where it should be. However, as you correctly pointed out, there are examples that show it correctly focused and undamaged.

It's a fixed focus system -- at "infinity."
The problem, we are told, comes from a flat mirror, which is supposed to reflect the incoming light into the detector of the hi-res camera. In space, again we are told, "moisture and cold" caused this formerly flat mirror to warp (!) slightly ... producing a slightly out-of-focus-situation.
"Deconvolution processing" is supposed to be able to restore the sharp focus mathematically. Nothing physically "moved," except the very slight (millionths of an inch) warp of the formerly flat mirror surface ....
But, why -- on a $333 million dollar project -- this type of "Hubble fiasco mirror situation" -- was NOT adequately tested for BEFORE launch ... is "unknown."
Seems like an awfully "convenient" possible excuse to have in your hip pocket ... in case you found something you COULDN'T share with anyone NOT on the Project .... :)

This is VERY revealing, for it strongly suggests that even BEFORE Impact the Deep Impact Team was planning on NOT revealing the actual spectra of the Impact!!
Why else would there be such a lousy official "description" of this key diagnostic tool of the spacecraft on their official website ... and NOT even ONE DIAGRAM of the actual spectrometer on Deep Impact itself!!??
Since they were never planning to show those spectra, they had no need of placing any equipment descriptions anywhere on their site!

I work with image and movie files all the time and there is no image that you cannot fix the focus on. Even if they couldn't get the focus perfect that is no reason not to release the photos. I am sure somebody out there can fix the focus even if NASA can't. To the people who believe the focus story they must look incredibly stupid, to the rest of us they are just making apparent the fact that they are hiding something.

If NASA knew that Tempel was something grander than they are telling us (perhaps holding artifacts), and likewise with other locations they are searching, it would be interesting to know how NASA knows these sites have remarkable secrets. For if these missions are planned, they must have a heads-up somehow on what they are expecting to find. Where are these heads-ups coming from? For example, the glass shards/dome on the Moon. Did they originally find these things from prior orbital photography missions? Or is there a body of historical Earth information they are getting these tips from?

When it comes to disclosure or suppression, capitalism allows for varying degrees of rationalization. For example, the public perception of American banks loaning money to Russia would be different at the height of the Cold War compared to after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It is a fine line between 'networking' and 'treason'.
Industry walks to the beat of a different drummer than ordinary Individuals and NASA is definitely a product of Industry today and was at one time, a propaganda tool for capitalism = so it comes as a surprise to hear RCH on Coast talking about 'good old days' when there was transparency ... or that thIndustry once responded to public demand for knowledge by sharing the data they gained with the people's money.
Perhaps NASA, or the Industry that supports NASA, will see the folly of ignoring public demand for results. That NASA and Industry get results is not enough. The mission doesn't matter until it has shared the truth. Astronauts wondering why people doubt the Moon Landing should speak up - and say that there has been a breach in the spirit of the alliance between the people (their money) and industry that created NASA.
lesley: Known techniques and signal theory available to the public don't allow for a perfect reconstruction of missing frequencies but for a fairly good approximation of them at the best, thru the use of well designed digital filters code and interpolation techniques.
Of course I am quite sure that conspiracy groups behind all of this have access to unknown (for now) technology based on unknown theories that allows for amazing signal recontructions that public available theory books and techniques makes you believe that's not possible to achieve.
Approximation is not good for scientific analysis while it can be optimum for human eyes and our perception of signals.

This fact shows that something like nano-machines and such are the shield protecting that "comet"-spacecraft thing as I thought...
Judge Overton in McLean v. Arkansas Board of Education, also known as the "scientific creation case", ruled that SCIENCE can only be guided and explained by reference to natural law and EXCLUDES REFERENCES TO THE SUPERNATURAL.
This definition of science goes back to the Royal Society for the Advancement and Promotion of Natural Knowledge - aka the Royal Society. So, if a probe, a pathfinder or a beagle were to find something that doesn't fit the paradigm of science - likely including dirty snowballs - it ceases to be science, or natural.

I was reviewing the last picture taken by the T1 impactor (or at least they tell us it was the last one) on the Deep Impact website. The link to the last pic is:

To make sure I wasn't seeing things, I compared adjacent portions of the image (such as craters with continously curving shapes) to make sure that rectangular formations weren't appearing simply because of limited resolution. But if you look closely, you can see rectangular geometry that 1s obviously much larger than the minimum resolution. LOOK ESPECIALLY IN THE LOWER RIGHT HAND QUADRANR OF THE IMAGE ! Is that some kind of cubic crystallization or something much more shattering ?

Hey, I recently saw a fairly good resolution (crisp and clear) of the comet at the NASA website. Now I don't see it anywhere; a similar one is blurry. I'm on the hunt for it somewhere, even in my cache.
My mistake, it is still there. Here it is. While it's not a superior image, it at least has some clarity. But interesting how all the other ones are blurred:

I would think it should, but I'm no expert on distinguishing what that act allows. But as I said, I think it does. Maybe in addition to sending emails requesting this data, we should also demand it under the authority of that pre-defined law. Of course history shows that some past attempts to obtain other data from other government branches have either been delayed or blocked, but our requests, or campaign, may hold more weight. Not as if it needs more weight than "Give us the data we bought!"
And as for the 333 number referring to the Mason 33 and 1/3 degree, was your hidden smirk at that a quick glance into your suggestion that this non-existent DI data leads back to your secret society theory? I don't say that with sarcasm, although I'm not as convinced on that hypothesis, ( I will agree that you have some interesting points in that theory though). I guess I still beleive that you will need to show more info of the direct correlation with real people identified in a secret society and the NASA and social\government authorities. Of course that may take back seat to the more pressing issue: DI spectral and image data, anyone?

Yes, this will be an appropriate step -- at the appropriate time. Filing FOIA requests is a VERY time-consuming process. So, I'm trying to exhaust the political route FIRST. We can ALWAYS file a FOIA later ....

I'm just curious. I began wondering if, had they been able to notice something quick enough, could they have (maybe) just said the mothership was severely damaged or even lost in its passage through the coma or debris created by impact, thereby allowing them to essentially "shut down" the DI website(s) (maybe by throwing in some of their last words and then mothballing it, so to speak)?
I appreciate your thoughts, I am fairly new to this :)

At least a day or so -- just to get ALL of it downlinked after being recorded on the "Fly-by" spacecraft. Then, there was probably at least another day or so before the first computer results came out -- identifying the materials.
Since the actual fly-by of Tempel 1 by that surviving spacecraft took place in only ~50 minutes, they HAD to report on "something" about the condition of the spacecraft to a literally waiting press ... and NASA chose to report the truth -- that "all was fine."
Thus, your interesting "political" option (that NASA could have simply claimed the spacecraft "was destroyed") was NOT available at the time (thankfully!) ....
This again argues that it was a REAL SHOCK, when they finally got the full imageing and spectrometer data set ... and KNEW what they were looking at. :)

Notice the 'waffle pattern' in the lower left corner as the craft approached Temple 1. Then look at all the other rectangular features this image shows.
Why would NASA use 'First Contact' with this mission? Maybe they finally are getting ready to acknowledge that ancient artificial artifacts ARE posssible within out solar system. I certainly frackin hope so since the time I have to share this 'disclsore revelation' with my ailing father is getting shorter each passing day.
Further examples of NASA hiding data go back to the Apollo era as well. Keith Laney has been a very active person in trying to acquire and share the Apollo images from ALL Moon missions with the public. Which most people don't realize is that more than 90% of ALL Apollo mission images remain unavailable on the internet.
In the first spectral results from ground-based observatories some comments were about 'entirely new species of unknown materials'. This within 36 hours of the imapact. What higher resolution of data the actual Deep Impact data has! And as Richard stated on C2C, and as I have used the JPL Spectral Library myself with ENVI; these things can work like an FBI fingerprint search where a data point ( spectra ) is input and the program goes through the database we have of ALL known periodic table and combinations thereof we are able to make looking for matches. It doesn't take weeks to ananlyze this data.
Something new and unknown was seen...we all would like to see it too. This 'propietary' system of princple investigators has gone beyond reasonable opportunity to publish first to just plain stinginess in the most basest of reasons to keeping the truth about ETI artifacts secret from us being high treason. Deep Space needs to be speaking up more...imho :)

Maybe but I think that the "comet" thing acutally has a nano-machines like pseudo-lifeform shield which is highly likely to be based on silicates....in fact that was the main only thing that it was revealed about what the impact produced out of the "comet"... Their function is probably defensive, maybe offensive as well and they act as a shield. Other info about it show that after the impact the outer form of the comet morphed back to its original state like nothing had happened, and the Impactor probably got sucked inside the shield thing.. we don't know if it got smashed or it was planned to be able to sustain the pressure of those "silicates" ... shield-machines..

In most cases of proprietary science, the people who foot the bill end up owning proprietary rights, while the people who spent the money and carried it out go and do the talk show circuit.
I don't see the people being handed what they own ... and the vainglorious scientists seem to be hiding.

Aredo, perhaps "God" is simply a word for the universe itself, as an all-encompassing consciousness? Most interpretations of quantum physics (not to mention many experimental results) indicate we are all intimately connected, on a level (higher "dimension" or vibrational density?) most of us cannot consciously perceive.
If that is the case, we are all fragments of a single "divine" consciousness, and, if such a first contact as Thomas describes were to actually occur, our lot would not be that of "worshippers", but rather we would be "returning to the fold", so to speak.
It is interesting to note that people who have had Near-Death-Experiences, Out-Of-Body Experiences, and hypnotic regression to a period "between lives" all report strikingly similar impressions... a realm of light and love and luminous beings, where thoughts become reality, a place where they can review their life experiences, and possibly even plan future incarnations...

"The Field" - Lynne McTaggart - Can't reccommend this one enough, I am trying to get everyone I know to read this book.
"The Holographic Universe" - Michael Talbot - A little dated (1991), and I find some of his speculation a little shaky, but a great, thoroughly referenced, solid book nonetheless.
"Convergence" - David Wilcock - Freely available from ascension2000.com. This work is a little more "out there", and includes sources such as psychic channelers, but also seeks to reconcile this information with modern scientific theories; I feel there is real value here.
We could get alot more tang and conveniences for the masses if they told the truth. In fact, NASA is showing future generations, who WILL follow the money, that the people cannot and should not trust Industry with their money.
Keeping up appearances would seem to be "the way" for ensuring future public funds, so there must be some identifiable reason to take the critical path they've chosen. The word "comet" might reveal some clues : has anyone written to you with epistemology as a reason ? That's what the judge is using when he says science is, by definition, non-super-natural.
To get inside the heads of the people who invented the language and follow their logic, the inventors of the language contrived to conceal many things from the masses. Sometimes with word games ... grail ... trail ...rail. Who could argue that word games are the Hallmark of the English Language - because its structure, or the skeleton of the language allows for that. It is an invented vernacular language (sorry, Chaucer).
So, it doesn't mean I'm going to end my comments with "global announcements soon" just because I suggest that COMET might be inspired by the word "come" with a T transposing into a templar cross, or a Jesus cross. Come+ ... could Comets be like taxis ? The easiest way to get to the inner solar system without fuel : hitch a ride and possibly leave footprints or structures behind. Holes for Pods or 'seats on the bus' ...
Rephrasing that, could the people who invented the English language have believed comets to be like taxis.
Comets were drawn into the background of old paintings, like the Bayeux Tapestry and if comets are like taxis, it would make sense that men from the stars are being alluded to : generating a justifiable reason to usurp the natural order (put into place by God) on the ground. My limited social science understanding of things, is that, there is no such thing as a comet because there is no such thing as a 'dirty snowball' flying at high speeds through the Universe. Do I even have to say it? OK I will. What data? What is the data saying? Its a bad sign when people start sponsoring space exploration with other countries so we have a better chance of gaining access to the information. This is obvious, but NASA needs to produce ANY data that citizens have paid through taxes. I would rather have a person WITHOUT a physics degree that is willing to think out the box than some trained monkey that will determine what I can handle.
Let the science community, at large or in pockets, make up their own mind and test to rule out theories vs. casting a blanket statements because they may be too far out for you to understand. This notion that you have to guide the masses with your thoughts first is bs....NASA is probably what our prior civilization forgot to create thereby being able to do things we could only dream about.

I think most any seven year-old could grasp the concepts of 10 PRINT "BRIAN" : GOTO 10, so I wasn't trying to stake any claim to being a genius. I picked up an illustrated children's book on BASIC from the local library and got my start on an old VIC-20 (5K of user RAM!). I was simply trying to balance my somewhat fantastical post above, by illustrating that I do come from a fairly logical/mathematical/analytical oriented mindset, that's all. I know I dont need an Astrophysics degree to read light patterns and map them to a periodic table all available on line on the internet.
I would probably prefer NASA not have an elitest 'only we can have it' exam in their theory of what space does...
...their theory so far, according to my childhood first experience in the 80's has gotten at least 14 excellent crew memebers of shuttle flights killed.
I think I would respect NASA more if they had a Zero count. I understand that with 'experimental' technology that cant happen, but let's get real, same mistakes AGAIN?

About a year ago I stumbled onto Peak Oil.. shocked me to the core to consider that perhaps modern civilization wasn't going to spin merrily on its way for the rest of my life, so I started reading everything I could about it. This led me to the study of the "global elite" and the history of groups like the Freemasons, the suppression of knowledge and/or technology, the works of people such as Lawrence Gardner, Sitchin, quantum physics/nature of reality, sites like Enterprise Mission, Halexandria, ascension2000, etc.
Been quite a trip down the rabbit hole so far. Perhaps it's all nonsense, but I guess we'll know one way or the other in the next oh, 7 years or so? :)

Hey, does anyone have an Astronomical Hall of Records-thingy with a list of dates when Tempel I was nearest to Earth . Also, we need an adjustment to calculate the Earth calendar dates when Tempel I was at the coordinates that became (July 4, 2k5) the impact location.
Rather than just play free-association, the dates would enable us to string out some dates ... which may have guided NASA's thinking to choose THAT comet at THAT place and time. We need to reconstruct the scene of the .... missing spectra and grasp the motivations behind the mission that we are enticed by NASA to believe, 'first contact' occurred.

I believe the name is spelled TEMPEL,,not TEMPLE. Ill have to go back and look but I believe it was Ernst Tempel who discovered this rock. So I do not see a connection between Tempel I and an actual Temple as in 'Construct' here,although Im am open minded to to be shown the connection that is alluded to.
Comet 9P/Tempel 1 was discovered on April 3, 1867 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel of Marseille, France while visually searching for comets. So we should not be calling this asteroid TEMPLE I,but rather TEMPEL I. Accuracy is important here in attempting to show context for this rock being a symbol of some sort. Thanks GRR8

I was recently in Huntsville, AL to visit family and while there took my 12 year old son over to Marshall to visit the space and rocket museum.
As we entered the beginning of the exhibit area the very first display we came to was a series of dioramas - nicely built models depicting various space related scenes. Now the way this particular display was arranged is where there were about four portholes mounted in a wall. So to view you would walk up to a port hole and look in at a particular model and its backdrop. Turns out each different model was actually adjacent and connected with the next and they all shared a common scene depicted on their back wall - a back wall the probably spanned 20 feet or so across.
Do you recall the painting that was commissioned by NASA and presented to the first President Bush? The one that shows two astronauts on the surface of Mars mounting a ridge and coming upon ruins of some ancient Mars civilization? Well, a giant size version of that painting is being used as the backdrop for these series of connected dioramas. If one looked into a porthole and concentrated on viewing the model in the foreground, one could easily miss seeing what the giant painting on the back wall was showing. But if one studied that back wall image and followed it all the way over to the far right, then one would see that the astonished Mars astronauts are looking at the profile of a huge head (much like the giant statue heads on Easter Island) and also a portion of the sloping surface of some pyramid structure.
My son and I were stunned to see this particular painting in use at the Marshall Space and Rocket Museum - and used in a rather subtle way that would be easy for the casual museum goer to completely miss.
Given the official stance that NASA takes regarding the various theories espoused by you, Richard, and others, it is rather bizarre to find this painting displayed to the general public at a NASA museum.
Now am I the only person that finds such a thing hugely ironic? The shear chutzpah of NASA to be so brazenly in-your-face toward that small portion of the public that knows what is going on...

I want to know what caused this rock to orbit the sun. I want to see if Dr Van Flanderns model of the solar system is correct. It may have sounded mean-spirited, but this is a Space blog and "Ooh" and "aah" is what people watching a Shuttle take off usually say. Also, I saw a Far Side comic years ago, with two Martians saying "ooh" and "aah" as mushroom clouds were going off on Earth.
Perhaps we sense the same impending doom - but it is one possible fate, but not our destiny. We can change things - and the most upward mobility room is closing the intellectual apartheid.

We transpose words for objects in our minds, so when you say the UN has an Ark of the Covenant - does it mean that some people in a NYC hi-rise (the UN) have a legendary ancient suitcase nuke (Ark) ? It's just a translation is required from technical to plain language.

The desire for diplomatic recognition drives the decision of what to put on flags, currency, etc. Israel was appealing to a Christian and Muslim World, so, of course they are going to point to something ancient that is observed by BOTH sons of Abraham (Muslim and Judaeo-Christian).
Call me a realist, but if I were told that the Washington Freemasonic Memorial was 333 feet and I was handed a compass and square as "clues", I would draw a map and show elevations.

The 'contrive to conceal' is probably an issue of posterity (these days) because it damages capitalism and the Cold War isn't quite over in Hollywood. We still don't knock capitalism in movies - it's not to be underestimated, Ronald Reagan and now Arnold Schwarzenegger have grown out of that power base. It's true that the leisure class might have to go get jobs if its proven that the rich aren't rich by natural selection, but cash is king and Insider Trading laws are fairly recent. I could raise no doubts over which God the Dollar was refering too...
Satan is described as the God of this system of things in the bible...
The bible also speaks of many gods, yes with a lower case 'g'...
So to simply state on a Dollar bill with no scriptural reference or no clarity as to which God...
I would state that God is ambiguously mentioned on the bill...
Therefore, the connotation in the linkage with money, would invoke the idea, that Gold or money is God.

The expression used to be : if you want to see who has power, stop paying your taxes. Since the 1950s and McCarthyism, if you want to see who has power, just try putting out a movie that casts capitalism in an unfavourable light.

Regarding MRO HIRES camera resolution. I've also seen the spec. at several sites of 1m/pixel.
But, at yesterday's MRO news conference they quoted a spec. of 1 FOOT/pixel resolution!!!
I assume this refers to the main mapping mission done at some 200 miles altitude...HOWEVER!!! During the aero-braking phase, the MRO will be at 100 MILES altitude over the south pole!!! To me, then, this implies that any imagery conducted over the south pole MAY have a resolution of 6 INCHES/PIXEL !!! !!! !!!

Really Richard your saying the same thing you said about the Mars Exspress mission and we still haven't seen a single photo of the Cydonia region. We can't even get the data from the Deep Impact mission. So what make you think we are going to get the actual data from this mission? It's not that I do not agree with your theories but the powers that be aka NASA are never going to release any information or data that would support them. So unless you can get an insider to smuggle out the data it's just not going to happen.
