Scotty Beams Up ... One Last Time.

James "Scotty" Doohan -- Chief Engineer of the fabled "Starship Enterprise," the legendary vehicle that became the real enduring "star" of that 20th/21st Century cultural Phenomenon called "Star Trek"-- died yesterday morning at his home in Redmond, Wash., just outside Seattle, at 5:30 AM, PDT, July 20, 2005. He was 85. The cause of death was cited as pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease.
It is curiously fitting that "Scotty" would "beam up" for the last time yesterday ... July 20th ... the 36th Anniversary of Apollo 11.
For, almost a year ago -- at a "Special Salute to James Doohan," to raise funds for the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research at Rockefeller University, in New York City -- Neil Armstrong, the First Man to Walk on the Moon on that amazing night in 1969, spoke in warm tribute of "Jimmy" ... and the pivitol role he played on Star Trek.
"I commanded three different types of spacecraft, flying as fast as 25,000 miles an hour. None of them had warp drive," said Armstrong, who, like Scotty, is an engineer. "The Enterprise was 100,000 times faster than anything I ever flew. Our craft did not have the ability to leave the solar system. It did not have a transporter to descend onto a planet. It would have been far more effective and less traumatic if we could have 'beamed down' (to the Moon, rather than use the Lunar Excursion Module).Perhaps more than any other character in the immortal 1960's television series, Doohan inspired several generations of young students to go into careers which could actually one day make the "Star Trek Universe" come true; indeed, after decades of appearing as "Scotty" on both the original TV show and in the hit spin-off films, Doonhan was specifically honored for this important influence on real science and engineering with an honarary doctorate in engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The School readily admitted that its actions were motivated by the fact that "half our engineering students cite 'Star Trek' -- and the influential role of Doohan's indomitable character -- as their prime reason for going into engineering!"
"When I get that command (of a starship) -- I want a chief engineering officer like Montgomery Scott."
James Doohan, as a boy in high school growing up in Canada, had excelled in math and science -- an interest and talent that more than casually assisted his much later, uncanny ability to be totally convincing in the role of the Enterprise's Chief Engineer. More than once, Gene Roddenberry -- Star Trek's creator, and Executive Producer of the original television series -- told me (see below) "Jimmy's insistence on believable treatment of engineering problems aboard the Enterprise resulted in serious modifications to several scripts ...."
In fact, for those who have sought -- without much success -- to identify the "magical quality" that enabled Star Trek to influence so many millions over the years and all around the world ... this "shared vision" among all the cast, not just Doohan, with Roddenberry's somewhat revolutionary ideas (in 1966) -- of a Universe open to the wonders of unfettered exploration, and a multi-racial human "family" willing to take on new challenges to create a Galactic society that worked -- went significantly beyond the usual "actor" roles in Hollywood ....
Doohan's insistence on "believability" in his role in Star Trek's scripts was not the exception among the Star Trek cast; it was the rule ....
Regular readers of the Enterprise Mission, or listeners to me on "Coast," know of my own long-term relationship with "Star Trek," my personal friendship with Roddenberry ... and many of its cast -- including Jimmie Doohan. That, of course, is why you're currently aboard the Enterprise Mission ... "boldly going where someone has gone before ...."

Some, however, may be less familiar with the fact that, because of this continuing relationship, in 1976 I became critically involved in initiating a political campaign -- along with several Washington DC policy advisors who were my friends and also Star Trek "fans" -- to convince then-President Gerald Ford to rename the first of the newly-developed Space Shuttles, "Enterprise" -- over NASA's strenuous objections -- in honor of (among other historical precedents we cited for the White House) "Star Trek's fabled starship" ... and its considerable political constituency (we felt) for space.
Or that, several months later -- after triggering an unprecedented torrent of mail to NASA Headquarters and the White House (over 400,000 letters, according to The Washington Post) -- following the Republican Primaries (which ultimately selected Gerald Ford, NOT Ronald Reagan, to be the 1976 Republican Presidential Candidate), and the mind-boggling Bicentennial Landings of the unmanned Vikings "to search for Life on Mars"--

NASA has neither forgotten ... nor forgiven.
This is why the Enterprise Mission logo features both "immortal ships" -- Gene's creation from the Star Trek Universe ... and our first, historic "people's" NASA Shuttle ....
Why the "Star Trek Enterprise" is "unbound, unchained to Earth" and ... "heading out."
And, why NASA's Shuttle is "eternally locked in an endless orbit of the Earth" (the "E") -- representing how, compared to Gene's unlimited vision of a real space program and Humanity itself, NASA is an obvious prisoner of its own, still secret fears ....

Our objective in beginning that campaign ... and then winning, over NASA's (then) bizarre opposition ... was extremely simple: to "truly democratize the NASA Mission" -- to make NASA's programs more open to all Americans, and its data truly accessible to everyone -- an objective ... after 29 years ... we are still attempting to achieve.
The same goal that Jimmy Doohan -- through his indelible role of "the ever-ingenious Chief Engineer of that other pioneering Enterprise ... on Star Trek" -- and his demonstrable inspiration of countless NASA scientists and engineers because of it, "boldly going where no one had gone before ..." also sought tirelessly to achieve ....
For, a little known aspect of James Doohan's life -- beyond his valient war record in World War II as a Canadian Artillary Officer who lost a finger in the D-Day Invasion, after he was shot six times; beyond his skill with languages and dialects (Doohan convinced Gene at his audition for the role that only "a Scottsman" could be a proper engineer for Enterprise ...); beyond Hollywood ... and after his last Star Trek film, in 1994 -- was James' continuing interest in the vast potential to society for real "Star Trek-type" scientific and engineering breakthroughs.
This was why, in 1999, my now-departed friend and colleage, Dr. Gene Mallove -- former Chief Science Writer at MIT, and later, Founder, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Infinite Energy magazine -- was able to convince James "Scotty" Doohan to bring his "Star Trek mystique" to the highly controversial subject of "Cold Fusion."
Appearing with Sir Arthur C. Clarke and a couple of dozen other major scientists around the world currently researching this potentially incalculable (and thus incredibly controversial) energy breakthrough, the former "Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise" took viewers through a 70-minute tour of the actual "cutting-edge science and laboratory engineering" now being pursued ... which will one day lead us all into a real "Star Trek Universe."
A VHS video of this seminal documentary "Cold Fusion: Fire From Water" is available through Infinite Energy Magazine.
In keeping with Jimmy's own ultimate wish, "to boldly go ...", within hours of James Doohan's death, news stories carried the announcement by his wife, Wendy, that Jimmy's ashes would be sent into space on "his own final voyage ....":
"... The couple had long ago agreed his ashes would be launched into the final frontier, space, his agent's office told AFP. They are to use Space Services Inc., a Texas-based company that [also] rocketed the remains of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry ... into the firmament."
Mr. Scott: "Ahead Warp Factor One" ....

James' character inspired many to the engineering and sciences fields. He will endure throughout the ages.
Richard,
That was a very well written piece. I am one of the thousands of people who became interested in engineering because of "Star Trek" and more specifically Scotty.
I was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Doohan in Tulsa a few years back. He was a remarkable man. Hopefully those of us influenced by his character can steer the world in the correct direction before it's too late.
Garold,
>Hopefully those of us influenced by his character can steer the world in the correct direction before it's too late.<
That was his most desired legacy ....
Richard,
Did NASA already have a name picked out for the first shuttle, before your campaign successfully changed it to Enterprise?
If so, do you know what it was?
Thanks!
Ken
P.S. I'm really enjoying the blog... keep up the good work!
Ken Anderson,
>Did NASA already have a name picked out for the first shuttle, before your campaign successfully changed it to Enterprise?<
Yes, "Constitution" ....
Thank you Mr. Hoagland.
Sometimes I think people forget just how much media influences. Star Trek was a landmark series in many respects. Not only in the concept that humanity must set sail off of this ever smaller cradle called Earth. But that humanity might actually make peace with itself. That despite all our differences, at heart we are all human and all alike—even in our differences.
The writers, producers and actors in the TV series Star Trek will may yet live on, their very images and their adventures will go with humanity. As it casts aside this mortal planet and learns to live in the greater place called the Cosmos. I suspect this legacy is one that Mr. Rodenberry, Mr. Doohan and Mr. Kelley would no doubt approve.
Wow! Excellent story! A brilliant weaving of the principle thread. That was a real eye opener.
I remember the last time I saw "Scotty" appear on a show, was an episode in Next Generation(i think?) centered around a Dyson Sphere and he was in the transporter buffer. He still had the humour and punch of his original character. Teaching best by example is way more ample, to alter the ways of those who struggle and seek, and seek to control.
Naming is, and always has been, an ownership level decision.
Who owns the stuff that gets built by NASA ?
Who owns the data that it returns ?
Maybe we need a little Spirit of 76 :-)
To start, I think RCH should grow his hair long again
and George Noory would definitely want to see the suit.
Hi Richard
I don't mean to be off topic, but I have been rereading a book, by Dan Winter called Alphabet of the EartHeart, that was "supressed" and silenced from being published.
If your familiar with his work, some of his earlier material I studied on line required some serious mental gymnastics to put it together and grok it. This print ready book, is very coherent and readable and I found the more scientifically oriented perspective of it well tuned to your Hyper Dimensional Model. The principles of rotation, Phi and scale and nesting etc. "spell" out clearly and ring true.
Have you seen this book or his concepts? Excuse me if I 'm off base here, it just clicked as similar. There was an FTP download source for it.
Dick,
It's always nice to remember the impact people like Mr. Doohan, you and TEM have had on history.
None of you ever get enough credit.
Thank you for reminding us of the contributions that have been made so far. It gives us hope that we CAN make a difference even with enormous odds against it.
Now that "Scotty" has 'beamed up', we must carry on.
Thank you Scotty, rest in peace knowing that we will not. Thank you Richard, and all that carry on the torch.
Rick
Frankly, I think that the thing that set the original series apart from all the subsequent series is that the Enterprise wasn't just a ship - it was a character. In all the other series, their ships have been little more than a stage for the actors, and the writers have treated it as a disposalbe item (there will always be another Enterprise).
But in Star Trek III, when they destroy the ship and Jim looks up and says, My God, Bones, what have I done? You felt it, and you mourned the death of that ship the way we mourned the death of Spock in the second movie.
Fare thee well, Mr. Scott.
This is a response to a comment in the last post, but I thought I'd put it in the most recent story.
Someone (Annonomous) said:
"Sometimes I think that this is one of those times when one realises that 'if you want it done, do it yourself'. Problem is... normal people just can't build a rocket on the basement and send it into space... If only we could, what would we find out that has been covered up?"
My question is, and has been for some time, why not? What's keeping regular citizens from banding together and going to the moon?
Like I've said many times before, it's not that complicated. We, the average public, are scientists, engineers, technicians, pilots, programmers, mathemeticians, etc. We have all the skills we need... is it just a matter of money?
If that's the case, that's a pretty small obstacle. Money is there for the taking. We just have to be creative about how we get it!
I really believe we could do this if we seriously had the drive. I'm not just spewing words here. If we could get something organized, I'd pour some time and energy into it.
What do you guys think? Is this something we could band together and organize? The whole idea really reminds me of a Robert A. Heinlein novel, "Rocketship Galileo".
As the first step, I'm going to look into getting a website put up. Maybe I'll start with something on my blog, fusionofthought.blogspot.com. If enough people are interested, anything can happen...
Richard,
Today is 7/21/05 and London was hit again. What is your take on these dates? 7/7/05 and now 7/21/05 during Temple 1 "window". Just a coincidence?...As usual excellent blog entry.
Thanks.
Fusion Knight... if you haven't already, you might want to check out the "Ansari X-Prize", and "America's Space Prize".. both efforts to promote private space ventures.

Dear Richard,
Thank you for your inspired tribute to Jimmy Doohan and for reminding us of how Star Trek blurred the distinction between television and real life events.
I was a young fan attending my first Start Trek convention in 1976 - at the old Commodore Hotel in NYC - when petitions were circulating to name the space shuttle "Enterprise". It was at this convention that I also had the pleasure of seeing/hearing Isaac Asimov.
I can recall seeing James Doohan at some cons and I remember how appreciative he was with the fans. What a shock though, at hearing him without his Scottish accent for the first time!
I remember that Gene Roddenberry was late one especially rainy night, for a showing of his personal copy of the blooper reel -which HE was delivering! The whole grand ballroom was filled with eager fans - just waiting. I left to use the restroom and as I was returning I rode up the elevator with a soaking wet Gene in his trench coat, who had just arrived, with the large blooper reel safely cradeled in his arms! I remember the thrill of telling my buddy before anyone else knew - "Roddenberry's HERE!"
I have enjoyed hearing you speak on Coast of your involvement with Trek and your meeting in Washington attended by George Takai. Someday it would be "fascinating" to hear about any specific contributions you did make to the show. Star Trek had a profound effect on my life - although I am not a scientist or an engineer - to ponder the wonders of the universe and to think of the bigger picture regarding mankind's destiny.
I'm also proud of the fact that my cousin, Fred Steiner, was one of Star Trek's primary composers.("Mirror, Mirror", "The Corbomite Maneuver", "By Any Other Name", "Day of the Dove", "The Enterprise Incident", etc.) Richard, I would love to nominate him as a composer for any of your movie or televison projects. He resides in...NEW MEXICO!
Thanks Jimmy a/k/a Montgomery Scott, both for your Star Trek legacy and for the impact you have had on many people's lives. You will be greatly missed.
Dear Richard,
I just LOVE the photo of you and Gene R. Any more like that one in the "archives"? How about posting a gallery on TEM?
Brian,
I'm aware of the X-Prize, but it doesn't seem good enough. It seems too pacifying. It's like a diversionary tactic that keeps "ordinary folk" from getting off the couch and doing something.
If you ask people what they think about private space travel, they'll say "Oh yeah. That's been done. That X-Prize thing..." and assume they don't have to be involved.
The X-Prize is too little too late. Why weren't there any privately funded space flights or moon landings in the last 50 years? Is it because we just assumed some "expters" somewhere would do it for us?
As we can see from the current state of official "space science", the "experts" can no longer be trusted. It's time we all became experts and did this for ourselves.
I loved star trek, and mr. scott was the first to help me perfect the scottish accent.
"thar be BEASTIES here!"

Speaking of science fiction, our old friend Rob Roy Britt (hackmaster +12) paints another picture of a frozen, inhospitable Mars.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20050721/sc_space/reportmarscoldbitterplanetforalonglongtime
Based on the amount of argon gas in the Mars meteorites, scientists have determined that the rocks were frozen for most of the last 3.5 billion years.
Based, of course, on the speculation that a handful of rocks, found on earth, are representative of the entire history of Mars.
I have some rocks in my pocket. Based on them, how would you like to buy 3000 acres of prime land in South Florida? What? Don't trust me? I can show you some pictures of the property. Of course, they are low resolution and colorized. But hey, would I cheat you?
Farewell, Mr. Scott. You will be missed...
It is deaths like this that fume my heart with disgust that such 'didling' with the ETI reality is being done that the pioneers in opening humanity's mind to the reality we are ALL just Earthlings will no longer be around when 'disclosure' of that truth permeates the world mass media stage.
This 'disclosure' stuff better frackin hurry before more pioneers pass on. My Dad who I first saw 2001 with and says he saw a Flying Saucer on day of my birth hasn't forever. It's past time NASA became an HONEST organization.
Bob...

You are EXACTLY right ....
And Scotty was her "voice" and "heart."
Jimmy Doohan (somehow ...) IMMEDIATELY understood that THAT was what Gene was trying to say about this "largest character" of all in Star Trek: that, she personified all the crews' ultimate spirit of "togetherness" within her protective hull and shields ... alone in the void ... on their (and our!) endless journey of "unfettered exploration" ....
As someone else said (maybe here ...) Scotty became her ultimate "defender, protector and interpreter." Because of Jimmy Doohan's deep understanding of this unspoken, background truth of "Star Trek" -- we ALL ultimately cared more for "her" ... and him.
That's why this is the on-going ENTERPRISE ... Mission.
Amen, Brother Richard. Amen.
CHOPS,
>Someday it would be "fascinating" to hear about any specific contributions you did make to the show. Star Trek had a profound effect on my life - although I am not a scientist or an engineer - to ponder the wonders of the universe and to think of the bigger picture regarding mankind's destiny.<
Yes, there were some changes made in the later years of the original series, apparently because of my suggestions. Someday, there my be an appropriate forum to discuss those ....

I'd LOVE to be in touch with your cousin. I asked Gene a couple of times for tapes of some of the Star trek music -- to use all those years ago in the Planetarium I was Curating in Springfield, Mass. I loved and used what he sent me in many of my Planetarium shows, but in the many years (and moves) those tapes ultimately disappeared ....
I'd truly LOVE to have something original written for the Enterprise Mission and its several media projects by your cousin!!
>Thanks Jimmy a/k/a Montgomery Scott, both for your Star Trek legacy and for the impact you have had on many people's lives. You will be greatly missed.<

NOW I know that ... thanks in part to you.
But, back in '76 -- when NASA was actually sending OFFICIAL representatives around to Star Trek conventions all over the Country, telling the fans they HAD NO RIGHT TO NAME "THEIR" SHIP!! -- we were all TOTALLY confused ....
The years have taught me how MUCH was at stake ... even then.

I sent him to the blog. We'll see if he reacts .... :)

Soon.
But, hey, don't you want us to solve this Deep Impact mystery -- first?!
IonTruO2, I don't think Dan Winter's book was banned in the 'suppressed' aspect. I believe he was busted for plagarism, or not giving due credit; taking stuff from Stan Tenon (I think). Just a few things, that is. But Winter did have a lot of original stunning research. And once again his work is generally 'forgotten', like many researchers of the 80s and 90s that we never hear of anymore, or current researchers refuse to bring back into the so-called truth seeking loops.
Richard,
have you ever tried or considered to go the
course of an independent film/doco for getting more
attention to the subject??.
like Morgan Spurlock(supersize me) or Michae Moore?
it seems it wouldn't take alot for you, coast, dr greer and
all the other heavy hitters to put something together and
get it to cannes, sundance or something like that.
you guys know that the REALLY intriging stuff can really only be found in the
depths on internet, books and esoteric circles. an indy film
would be a great exposure tool to the more of the public interested.
or has this all been tried before and failed,
and I dont know what the hell I talking about? :)
Justin,
>Have you ever tried or considered to go the
course of an independent film/doco for getting more
attention to the subject??<
After my "Hollywood experience" of the past several years with "the Studios," we're looking in PRECISELY that direction.
Stay tuned .... :)

Winter -- a Neo-Nazi, with a deep hatred of all things "Jewish" -- attacked and stole much material from Stan Tenen (a Jewish rabbinical scholar), and then put it out of the Web -- twisted -- as his own. Standard tactic to discredit original research.
The Superior Court fight dragged on for years, with me as a prime, sworn witness! Tenen eventually won -- both in terms of the core issues, and damages.
Winter promptly fled the Country, and is STILL publishing stolen, and anti-Semitic material, cloaked in the guise of "original research" ... but from places where American law can't touch him.
Throw enough spaghetti on the wall ....
As I have posted on many other boards since I heard the news:
Scotty (James) will not be forgotten. He was an icon of Sci-Fi, Pop Culture and clearly had a huge influence on people the world over. Not a bad day's work, friend.
The news was like a punch to the gut.

an incubator, of sorts, for original research.
I think Mr. Scott's crowning moment was when he refused to be tricked into a fight when his captain was insulted, but God help the Klingon who called Enterprise a garbage scow.
Dear RCH and friends,
George Takei (Mr. Sulu) has a nice tribute to Jimmy Doohan on his website. For those interested:

Hi Richard,
Not really relevant to this post, but was just wondering if you could answer: Have you made investigations of Russian launches since 1957, and found any correlation with particular dates or locations of celestial objects, similar to NASA launch dates?
keep it up!
Hunor
Richard,
Thank you for the tribute.
1969 ... Mekong Delta, every evening that it was possible, we would set up to receive the AFVNN (Armed Forces Viet Nam Network) broadcast of Star Trek.
Sometimes, five days a week, when we could get the Star Trek broadcast, we could escape to another place and time.
The show, the characters and actors, meant a lot to us all.

Hello Richard
O.kayyyyy!? Didn't know that?
I know little to nothing in those regards. A Toxic situation, no energy to dwell with something like that.
Leaving that story, one can see that intellectual and esoteric advancement is well possible yet is not enlightenment or real trancendence when there is hate and possession.
Those characters all need to do alot of work to move beyond really base self limiting self centering possessive struggle based existence amounting to nothing. Truly, the bar must be raised for all of us. What passes for so called consciousness these days is sad. First step for all: Purify Intention.
One must demand clarity, verity, conduct with sincerity.
This finishes us right back with the current, way of NASA. The call is universal, across scale from personal to group-entities. Conduct, right conduct is the call to them. Share data. What is that silence, secret making, and public seperating?
The old man from scene 24,
>I think Mr. Scott's crowning moment was when he refused to be tricked into a fight when his captain was insulted, but God help the Klingon who called Enterprise a garbage scow.<
"The Trouble with Tribbles" ... one of my FAVORITE episodes. Written by an old friend, David Gerrold. His FIRST script too ....
I thought of putting that scene into what I wrote, to illustrate the key role Jimmy played in emphasizing the importance of "the Enterprise" ... but I thought it would be overkill.
Thanks for reminding us of that GREAT scene .... :)
Dear Richard,
You mention Gene Roddenberry in this article, and it thus gives me a chance to ask you something that's been on my mind for a couple of years.
Are you still involved with 'The Nine', as per the claims made in the Stargate Conspiracy book, which I'm sure you're familiar with. I know that Gene Roddenberry is accepted as having been heavily influenced by this group, and the authors make quite a convincing argument that your theories (at the time) were also in part influenced by 'The Nine'.
I used to be quite interested in the theories of Bauval and Hancock, and I have fond memories of watching your UN briefing video all those years back. But the authors of the above book made me realise that some of the conclusions that have been reached within the 'conspiracy' field, are actually way off, instead pointing to this grand orchestrated plot to 'invent' conspiracies where there are none, to further a much more sinister plot of changing public perception.
I hope you can shed some light on this 'Nine' issue.
And even though I don't really believe in most conspiracy theories anymore, I must admit your Deep Impact articles have been great fun reading, and I keep checking regularly to see what the new developments are.
Rob.
Is the conspiracy about a new group trying to gain power ? Or is it an old group trying to preserve their power ?
Money equals power. Old money has the kind of power that controls economies.
What you have to ask yourself about the Stargate Conspiracy : Is the 20th century American Empire a unilateral creation ? Was it created by Americans for Americans ? Or, was it created by elite capitalists for elite capitalists ? Britain's age of Greatness began when the Black Nobility of Europe (non-British nobility from the continent) chose Britian as a 'flag of convenience'. The precedent is that the people most dependant on capitalism is the privileged class.
The original name for the Royal Society was the Royal Society of London for the Advancement and Promotion of Natural Knowledge. What does that imply is being NOT advanced or NOT promoted ? The Royal Society was about replacing organized religion with organized science. Replacing one group which suppressed & manipulated revelation with oganized science, which is no stranger to suppressing & manipulating knowledge about the super-natural.
Stargate Conspiracy - where do I start ? When the topic is Space, you really can't swing a dead cat without hitting something connected to the "military-industrial complex". Space Law is an extension of International Law - the same rules that brought you Imperialism and Colonialism.
To get the right tint to see through the Stargate Conspiracy, remember British History. The Toynbee Faction of the Round Table and the Scholarships of Cecil Rhodes. The Round Table controlled Oxford, owned the Times and was so powerful in diplomacy, they sent the British delegation to the Treaty of Versailles (ending WWI) then worried about their image, so they created the Royal Institute on International Affairs. Now THERE is a conspiracy ... one that is well documented and nobody can show that it ever really ended.
My conclusion was that Stargate Con is a poorly thought-out hit-piece. It's hard to prove that someone (or some group) is committing a social science fraud. The litmus test, which Stargate Con ignored - is adherence to the scientific method. When the British mystery guides find a Professor McDaniel type to give an academic stamp of approval to their methods - I might re-think my opinion.
Just because someone says that Mars was inhabited (long enough to build things) and you rely on observation and measurement to track what you find - you might be a social science nuisance to some, but not a fraud. Stargate Con seemed a feeble attempt to deflect blame by those trying to preserve power, and damage the hard-earned credibility of those who threaten to expose their position and undermine the person most likely to prosecute them or expose their methods.
It's not just engineering but other fields including system administration...
Many were inspired by his Star Trek character.
to The Old Man From Scene 24:
Thanks for reminding us of Mr. Scott's role in that fight scene from The Trouble With Tribbles. I would like to further clarify your point. The trigger for Scotty's loss of control was not simply the Enterpise being called a garbage scow by the Klingon, it was when he said that the Enterprise should be "hauled away AS garbage". Thanks again.
Great pic of you and GR.
Nice piece. Doohan would've appreciated it.
To Scotty: "Thanks for the Ride :)"
That was a great article on James Doohan.
Like others who posted above, the "Scotty" character influenced me into getting a degree in electronics engineering.
Mr. Doohan will be missed, even by people who never got a chance to meet him.
Dan,
Thanks. :)
Thanks to video and DVDs, his character -- and I mean that BOTH ways -- will live forever ....
To show the Great sense of humor that James (Scotty) Doohan had:
In was the late 1980's I had the pleasure to meet Scotty at the War Memorial building in Trenton NJ during a Star Trek/Dr. Who Convention.
I got in line to get Scotty's autograph. When I finally got up to him, I thanked him for many years of enjoyment!!
I requested that he please sign the autograph to me and my wife(Diane) who couldn't make it to the show due to the fact that she was very Pregnant !
Scotty looked up at me with a somewhat serious look on his face (at this point I thought I had said something wrong with that look on his face) and said:
" Well son, if your wife was here I'll be giving her a very big kiss,...but the only thing you're gonna get from me is a handshake!?"
For a brief moment there was total silence ...then Scotty stood up and gave a Big laugh ...shook my hand, wished the best for me and the wife, we got his autograph, and I had my picture taken with the Engineer of the Starship Enterprise "Scotty"...... :)
That was a really cool day :)
Mark,
>"Well son, if your wife was here I'll be giving her a very big kiss,...but the only thing you're gonna get from me is a handshake!?"<
That was Jimmy ... and, yes, it must have been a really cool day. :)
Just so you know, Richard, I arrange my schedule around your appearances on C2C- I consider your segments to be "don't miss at any cost". Perhaps I should just give in and become a streamlink member so I can get them on MP3?
BTW, I never had the pleasure of meeting James Doohan, but I did get to work with Jonathan Frakes a few years ago. I hope I can again someday, he's a great guy.
Dave...
Streamlink is worth every penney..Especially when too many things are going on around you and you miss a show...Knowing you have streamlink does make life alittle easier :)
It's amazing how Doonhan was specifically honored for this important influence on real science and engineering with an honorary doctorate in engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Taking nothing away from who he was as a person.
But when you do something like this and you do not honor Nikola Tesla the Father of
Light and Engineering, the best of the best. The Worlds greatest Engineer has always been forgotten in the Text books and School Halls across this great nation.
AC/DC...The Radio which he won after his death (As you know Marconi lost, they should change that song")
And Thousands of other inventions (Wireless) that changed the world forever....
Where is his Bust...Where is his name mentioned...
In Engineering schools across the country, the only one to do anything about it is a man by the name of John Wagner who has been selling Tesla T-shirts for 15 years or more to raise money for head busts of Nikola Tesla to put in the Collages around the country. This is for the awareness about what this man has done for this country and the world..Kudo's to John and best to Mr. Hoagland who always seems to be right on Nasa's Tail.
Again nothing against Scotty, everyone loved the man...
But when the man who gave us so much for nothing, such as Tesla did, he deserves more then what has been given.
Long Live Tesla!
Draco,
What can I say ...?
I agree: it is a reprehensible that Tesla is NOT acknowledged as he should be for his seminal electrical engineering achievements.
But, it is getting better; there are far more "Discovery" shows, or "Modern Marvel" programs, etc., which DO acknowledgement Tesla's vast contributions toward our 20th/21st society ....
He will get his bust in time .... :)
None of this, of course, detracts from Jimmy Doohan's very real contributions toward getting new generations to take SERIOUS interest in real science and technology.
It's NOT a "zero/sum game."
Rob,
>Are you still involved with 'The Nine', as per the claims made in the Stargate Conspiracy book, which I'm sure you're familiar with. I know that Gene Roddenberry is accepted as having been heavily influenced by this group, and the authors make quite a convincing argument that your theories (at the time) were also in part influenced by 'The Nine'.<
Where should I start ...?
Aside from spelling my name right ... there is NOTHING in the "Stargate Conspiracy" book that I know from personal experience, or firsthand research, that is accurate -- ESPECIALLY about me!!
It was (as others have written here ...) a deliberate HIT PIECE -- designed to deflect attention away from what I, Graham, Robert and others were saying ... to "why" we "might be saying it."
Standard disinfo practice.
And ... there ARE "conspiracies": otherwise, why do we as a society spend literally BILLIONS of dollars annually on "Homeland Security?" Why did we pass the "Patriot Act" legislation after 9/11?!? Why do we fund an "FBI," "CIA," "NSA," etc., etc., etc.?
The world has ALWAYS been made up of groups trying to keep "order" in society ... and those who want a DIFFERENT "order."
Those in power use their vast array of tools -- which include, in so-called "free societies," deliberate distortions and lies regarding critical historical and scientific information -- to keep those who would take over from them from achieving POWER ....
It's that simple -- accurate information IS the ultimate power. So, as the saying goes, "in the fog of war the first casualty is truth." For those in power, they're ALWAYS at war ... with those they rule. So, of course, they're going to control and manipulate essential "truths" ... to REMAIN in power.
In this Country, the Declaration of Independence identified three "freedoms" essential to a free society ... "Life" ... "Liberty" ... and the "Persuit of Happiness." A guarantee of "truth in information" was NOT among them ....
That's what the First Amendment was all about .... And now we have a journalist in JAIL.
This is NOT rocket science ... except in the case of NASA .... :)
Oh, and the Stargate book debunking "official conspiracies" ... WAS a conspiracy -- to hide the increasingly apparent truth (just look around you, from Carl Rove to Deep Impact ...). :)

I salute the old dear Chief Engineer of the NCC 1701 U.S.S. Enterprise.
Forever there, chasing the stars, close to the warp drive ...
Richard......
It must confound the CSICOPs who lurk in your sites to note your red-blooded enthusiasm for the space program.
In that vein, I see a real danger in the years encompassing the Space Shuttle retirement to museum status and the operational status of the CEV.
We need to lobby Congress to ensure that the modular CEV program doesn't get hobbled through congressional monkey-wrenching like the Shuttle did.
For that matter, I'd rather NASA also continue with shuttle technology development in the form of a SHUTTLE APPLICATIONS PROGRAM. It's stupid to throw away decades of work...especially when we're STILL going to require massive lift capabilities for returning to The Moon and Mars, etc.
HELL!!! WHAT WE NEED IS THE SATURN V !!!
oh yeah...I almost forgot......
I want to second an earlier suggestion that you let your hair grow!!!
I haven't cut MY hair for maybe 25 years. It long since stabalized at a certain length. I think it's healthy......
